Hi

Ive been on a antidepressant called cymbalta, not really for depression but rather to focus better on my studies. In the beginning it was fine and it worked pretty well but after about six months I started losing interest in everything. Nothing seemed to be worth while doing and whats worse I didn't feel worried about these things.

I started worrying about not worrying about anything so I stopped using the medication. I feel fine at the moment bit off some days and the concentration problem is back.

Is it possible that I am just not compatible with the drug? Or is it a serious problem because of some underlying illness? Its driving me crazy!!

If anyone have ever experienced something similar please let me know!!

Absolutely there's a chance that the drug isn't working well for you. Have you tried other meds to help with concentration?

I tried cymbalta for pain and it was disastrous for me.

I don't know why you would be prescribed an anti-depressant if you have not been dxed with depression. Lack of concentration & focus can be symptoms of depression, but by themselves I don't think would lead to the prescription for an anti-depressant.

It should be investigated further, but I question whether your current doc is the one to do it. I think it is somewhat irresponsible to prescribe an anti-depressant under the circumstances you describe, but maybe you haven't revealed all the symptoms you experienced.

I was tested for ADD & am on medication for that (Concerta) which helps tremendously with focus & also take Provigil to help combat the excessive daytime sleepiness I have as a side effect from my meds for bipolar 1.

Hope you get it figured out. --Suzy

It seems odd to prescribe an SSRI for concentration issues. The evidence for that use is extremely weak and SSRIs have nasty side effects that would usually would outweigh the benefits.

Consider trying a stimulant. Methylphenidate and mixed amphetamine salts are usually the first line of treatment for ADHD, but if you don't have classic ADHD, your doctor will probably be hesitant to prescribe them.

I recommend asking for a trial of bupropion. Bupropion is a stimulant which is very similar to amphetamine and methamphetamine. It's technically an antidepressant, but it might help. It's often used in adult ADHD, and a doctor will probably not hesitate to prescribe it.

I tried it for depression, but it didn't directly help the depression at all. However, it had very strong stimulant effects which countered the loss of energy and concentration. I'm still taking it because, in general, it makes me feel better. My doctor thinks that's a good idea too because after all, feeling better is the goal.
