I am thinking about trying a medication for anxiety and will of course get a lot of info from my doc. But I was wondering if anyone could share their own experiences with these. Have you ever taken a small dose of either one to help with sleep? (I get anxious at night). Is it normal to take a small dose every night?

Thanx.

Xanax did nothing for me at all...I took 5 of them at once and NOTHING...
Ativan makes me sleepy but did work on my anxiety. But it gave me that drugged feeling. Each person will react differently to medication so it is hard to say which one will work best for you. If you are looking for something at bedtime then I would think Ativan would be the way to go from my own experiences. I now take valium 5mg but that is VERY hard to get a pdoc to prescribe. Let us know which one you go with and how you make out!

Xanax nearly killed me twice and ironically, Ativan was the drug the ER staff pumped through my IV on each occasion to bring me out of my violent and panic stricken state.
Aside, the one thing I did not like about Xanax was the taste of the pill- VERY bitter.

I've taken both before at once-a-day. Xanax was little stronger than the Ativan but they didn't work particularly great. I become very resistant to both medications very quickly; I didn't take either one longer than two months.

I like propranolol (a beta blocker) alot more than the benzos.

I've taken both - Ativan was stronger for me. Xanax works quickly for anxiety. After a while, the drowsy affects seem to decrease though

I just started taking Xanax (well, the generic of it). I have an Rx for .25mg twice a day PRN. It makes me sleep, even if I only take half of the tablet. But, it has significantly decreased my anxiety so I guess I can deal.

I have been taking xanax for eleven years. I used to take it several times a day for anxiety but now just need it to help me sleep.

I took ativan by mouth one time before a MRI and it had little effect.

I take 1mg Ativan every night before bed, and then have 1mg PRN daily. I have been on this dosage for about 8 months and it isn't working as effectively as it was. I do work up a tolerence to meds easily though. Xanax works quicker than Ativan, but Ativan lasts longer in the system.

I took Ativan, but built up a tolerance to it pretty quickly and eventually wound up abusing it.

I now take Clonazapam (Klonopin) 1 mg 3x daily & 2 mg at night. It's longer lasting that Ativan, and so far I haven't built up the same tolerance to it.

A lot of Dr's won't prescribe benzo's long term, but I've been on Clonazapam since 2007.

I've been on Benzo's for quite a while, but try not take them daily. I have never found myself to get addicted, but I do seem to build up a tolerance very quickly.
