I just read something on the Web which said that Elavil (amytryptyline [sp.?]) is the best-indicated antidepressant for "agitated depression", which sounds exactly like what I have. (anger and irritability as primary symptoms; also I've tried almost all the SSRIs and gotten minimal benefits, which would confirm that dynamic in my mind.)

My question is (I'm not on anything right now, and not under the care of a psychiatrist), how do I approach someone with an idea of what I want to take already, especially as it is an older medication? I've done things like that in the past and not gotten very far, as I get the impression mental health "pros" don't like it when clients self-diagnose. Thanks for your help

Struggling:

Hmmm....sounds like a dilemma. You're right the docs don't like self-diagnosis, it would be nice if we could get by with it Elavil for agitated depression? But seriously, you should see your doc and tell your symptoms and let it go from there. However..I will tell you this about amitriptyline:

My stepmother's mother was on it for many years, started out short term, which it is indicated for, and ended up being 19 years and extreme addiction, ending in hospitalization and extreme psychosis. Not saying it will happen to you, just saying it does happen.

These drugs are indicated for very short term use, some people take them longer than others, some have no issues with addiction. My husband took Nortriptyline and had no effects from it at all. It's according to the person.

If you trust your doctor, then talk to them about it. Sometimes things are not as they seem. Elavil for agitated depression? Good luck!

Kimberly.
