I have been on Prozac for about 10 years off and on for social phobia, anxiety, mild depression. My regular internal med doc prescibed it for me on my suggestion and it works beautifully. Generally just 20 mg per day. I am a mom of three small kids and I just cannot tolerate the extreme fatigue it is causing! I actually stopped taking it in May and now my symptoms are returning as well as I have gained 10+ lbs since stopping. On it I need a 2 hour afternoon nap daily or I couldn't function. My life revolved around sleep.

So, now we have moved and I will be seeing a new internal med doc--i want to restart the Prozac and maybe add Provigil but do you think I will need to be be referred to a Psych? I am perfect on prozac minus the fatigue which is truly unbearable. Has anyone else has this problem and how was it handled? Thank you.

Amy:

I am currently on Prozac and feel that the fatigue side effect has gotten alot better. I have had other issues with my health lately so it's not been an "issue" with me as of late Extreme Fatigue on Prozac

However, I know at first I was extremely tired. REALLY TIRED. Then it got better and better. I still need a nap everyday. I needed a longer nap everyday without the Prozac. I think some of it is the depression and maybe 20 mg. is not enough. That's what I'm taking but was thinking for a bit I might have to go up ...my doc and I have decided to wait and see with that.

I don't know if this makes any sense but wanted to weigh in on this subject too.

Good luck and take care,
Kimberly.

Hi Amy, I noticed that you requested your original rx of prozac. With all the improvement you noticed, you were probably right in guessing that an anti depressent would help you, but it sounds to me like you would benefit from a doctor's expertise in helping select one less difficult for you. Sleep seems like one of the big changes in a lot of med situations, and many once "properly" medicated sleep more than they are awake. But for what you are describing, seems to me you shouldn't have to put up with so much fatigue. Good luck.

my brother was on prozac when he was like 17, and he experienced fatigue also. he stopped taking it after a few weeks though.
i took prozac also, but it made me feel like i was on speed! my house was SO clean. i stopped it though cuz i still felt very depressed.
zoloft makes me fatigued, and so do antianxiety meds ive tried like valium, xanax, and serax.
right now i self medicate with different meds ive collected, i take serax to reduce hypomania, but it makes me so tired that i compensate with lots of pepsi. plus, sometimes when im on meds i dont eat, and that totally contributes to the fatigue.

i guess everyone justs responds differently to meds.

I was on 20 mg of Prozac for several months and just felt "dead"...no emotions, tired all the time, etc. I stopped it and am not trying wellbutrin. So far I have tried effexor, zoloft, lexapro, and prozac. Maybe #5 will do the trick. If not, I give up. This is no life going from one med to another. I also found out I have sleep apnea so my fatigue could also be attributed to that. I am wearing a breathing mask now.
