hey folks - how many mgs of trazadone do you find yourself taking in order for it to be effective. i'm just trying to figure out if i need to take a higher dosage or if the meds are just crap (for me). i'm currently taking 150mgs and i still can't sleep...i just end up lying in bed feeling dizzy. and if i DO sleep, the drugs don't keep me asleep. my pdoc says it's ok to take more, but i'm kinda like "why bother"?

I'm currently taking 50mg at bedtime, and it works for me. But I'm a lightweight when it comes to sedating drugs (ie: 0.25-0.5mg of clonazepam knocks me out.) I have heard of people taking 200mg+ of trazodone for sleep, but not every drug works for everyone, either.

Hi there,

I just went through that phase last Friday. My doc prescribed 150mg.
Very bad side effect. Dry mouth, coughing, stuffy nose, nose sometimes
bled. Couldn't sleep. I told my doc and she try 300 mg . What a joke!
Then she also said go back to the clonazepam. I back to my 1 and a 1/2 mg. and have been sleeping like a baby. Problem is , I was starting to feel
less depressed with the Trazadone dosage.

Oh well,

Hope you find the right med.
Good luck

thanks embrace & sassy. i appreciate the feedback. i saw my pdoc today & she told me it was ok to take up to 400mgs. that really seems like a bit much. i'm just going to up it to 200 & see what happens. sassy - it's nice to know that your doc just keeps urging "up the dosage! up the dosage!" too.

I am actually just going to start this med in one hour!

25 mg. I am very sensitive to meds.

The reason I am on this is because I can't get into a deep stage of sleep and end up sleeping for hours. This drug is supposed to get a person in a deep sleep and make them feel refreshed upon waking. I have my fingers crossed!

I started taking it about three weeks ago. I have the 150mgs but I split them in half and take only 75mg because I the 150mg pills make me sleep for like 10-12 hours. the doctor tld me I could do this. On the 75mg I fall asleep within one hour and sleep well except for accasionally getting up to use the bathroom. I also have really vivid dreams since starting trazodone.

good luck to all of you starting the med. this is my 2nd time trying traz. the first time i was prescribed 50mgs and then up to 150. i have no idea why i need such a high dosage. maybe it just doesn't work for me. however...i just started taking 250mgs and have had 2 nights of decent sleep. and yeah, the vivid dreams are kind of weird - but i tend to have a lot of strange & bad dreams.

I took Trazadone at one time but not for long. I took 25mgs at bed time
it knocked me out for like 15 hrs and I even had trouble waking up for the
rest of the day!!!!!

I don't know how some people can take higher doses, Id think I would sleep for days if I took higher than 25mgs...LOL....I only took it once.

Then I threw it out!!!

I guess everyones system is different.

It also gave me a bad side affect called priapism, which was a little
scary for mee!!!

I take 200mg. From what I have read, its therapuetic dose as an antidepressant is 200-400mg. When it is used as a sleep aid, the effective dose may be anywhere from 25mg-400mg, depending on the person and their sleep issues.

I hope you find relief soon.
