I'm thinking of telling my pdoc that I'd like to convert over from Valium to Niravam (orally disintegrating alprazolam tablets) because I feel the Valium is in a way "pooping out" on me. I'd like to see if I can have better relief with Niravam. What I'd like to know is how do you convert (safely) over from one benzo to another without having the risks that comes from stopping a benzo.

Let me know what you have experienced when it comes to changing benzo's. Just so you know I've been on Valium for months so going off of it is not going to be simple / or can you just stop one benzo and start another without worry?

Please let me know your experiences.

Thanks.

I switched from Ativan to clonazapam with no problem. I was on a really high dose of Ativan (basically I was abusing them) so my pdoc calculated what the equivalent dose would be with clonazapam (longer acting) and we simply made the switch one day. Now I was in the hospital so it was pretty safe. And then we gradually tapered down to my current dose of clonazapam. I didn't really have any side effects from the change other than that I missed the rush and instant effect of the Ativan. But I do know the clonazapam keeps me calm a lot longer.

Good luck.

I srongly recommend switching to clonazepan (Klonopin). It's very long acting and very effective. Also, I personally think it less addictive even though it is a benzodiazapine. I've been on 3mg. a day for six months now, and I find it to be very effective.
