T gave me homework today : she asked me to write autobiography (no deadlines, no requirements, it could be in any form I want and so on) . My first thought was "what the ..." , the second thought was (and all subsequent thought related to this topic) "no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no". Yeah... well... idk...
I'm just wondering, has your T ever given you this kind of homework?

I wish she would! Then again, maybe I'm just narcissistic enough to believe that she would actually WANT to read my autobiography.

But seriously...I kind of wish she would. She knows I love to write, so that would introduce her to my writing, also, it would give her a lot of details that maybe get left out, or we don't have time to discuss in our sessions.

I actually would! I'm just weird like that. I think it could be helpful, because like I mentioned, there are often critical details that are unknowingly left out, and it's hard to cover one's whole history in sessions, especially when there are other issues at hand. Maybe she's interested in seeing your past written out, and it could turn out to be extremely helpful in therapy. Also, maybe she wants to see how you word your past...your unconscious thoughts and feelings through your words. I learned from my old T that true thoughts and realizations come out unconsciously in our writing, so maybe that's what she wants to explore.

I would ask her why she gave you that assignment. It would be interesting to know her reasoning behind it.

Oh, why couldn't I think of it when she asked me to write it. Now I'll have to wait for a week. I want to know NOW!!!!

This is essentially my past in a nutshell as well.

Does she let you call or e-mail between sessions? If she does, for the sake of the assignment, I feel like it would be worth asking before your next session...for the sake of progress if/when you start this homework.

Mine did, at the beginning She had me write what I would want my life to be like in 10 or so years. I read it out loud to her, laughing half the time at all the dumb crap I put down. After I was done reading it, she said that it wasn't exactly what she wanted , but it was ok because it helped her to know me better

i had a t who asked me to write something like that. it was really helpful and i realized a few things (patterns) that i hadn't noticed before about my history.

wow, this sounds even more complicated than the assigment I got from T. I would be like "what future, there is no future" I'm considering maybe I should write it (especially if she lets me do it as a blog with pics and some youtube stuff, lol)

if i'm remembering correctly my t at the time had asked for a history of all my problems, hurts, etc in life. so, i started with a bit about my parents and the dysfunctional family dynamics and then started chronologically with the most significant hurts in my life. i think it turned out a few pages long.

one thing you might try to just get started is to jot down a list of the events you want to write/blog about. i really like your blog idea where you could add pictures, music, etc. i bet t would love it.

Mine is big on the homework, but she would probably never ask me to write an autobiography because I'm always really longwinded and she knows I'd end up writing a book.

I like homework in general because it makes me feel more involved. When my homework is writing something, though, T usually makes me read it out loud, and I hate doing that. We usually end up arguing about it.

I never get homework, but it's fine either way. If she ever does decide to give me some, I'm not opposed to the idea.

I ALWAYS have some sort of HW. i think it helps me stay connected with therapy throughout the week.

3v!!! i LOVE your blog/pics/youtube idea. what a lucky T you have, who'll get to read something so creative. if my T ever asked me to do your assignment (and i know he wouldn't!!) he would be lumped with 30 pages of writing, most probably dot points, and hardly anything that strayed from 'facts'.

i've been given homework of the 'monitor and challenge your thoughts' variety. not that exciting. and usually i dont take it back to share with my T, because i'm super stupid and private that way.

My T didn't give me homework I had to do, but she did recommend that I read Alice Miler's "The Drama of the Gifted Child." T also told me to put into practice some behavior modifications, so that was homework in a way.

You know what, I'll do it. Idk if it will be something I share with T or not (I have no idea what does she mean by autobiography), but today the whole idea sounds like fun, so I'm planning on getting a blog today. I even already have the first sentence, lol lol lol "She was born half a year before birth of internet, maybe this is why they love each other so much" lol lol lol
