under what circumstances can your psychotherapist divulge details of your session to others?

not just to anyone , but if you told your therapist about illegal activity, is she required to
tell law enforcement?

(and no Im not doing anything illegal!)

If what you tell her has to do with endangering someone else, ie child abuse or murder or what-not, they have a duty to report. If it's like selling crack, they can't report that. If you tell them you shoplifted, can't tell. It's really dependent on hurting others.

in australia, they are meant to let someone know if you are planning on hurting yourself, or someone else, or know of someone under 18 being hurt.

otherwise, if it doesn't involve physical harm to other people, the general rule is that they won't tell unless it's something that can get you sent to prison for 5 years. so my T used to tell me that if i ever wanted to speak about something like that, to make it sound like it was something that wouldn't get me imprisoned for more than 5yrs.

This is an interesting question. With information about harming yourself or others, that's a definite yes. For anything outside of that range, I think it's really based on the T and his or her views. I don't think anything is set in stone.

it is an interesting question that also relates to pastors and/or clergy....remember when O.J. Simpson alledgedly confessed to Rosie Greer in jail that he did do it , but Greer was a minister and somehow could not be forced to testify

I understand if your planning on harm to others, but like gravvy said, what If I tell my therapist I smoke marijuana (which I dont), can she report it to the authorities?

now I read where Facebook is dumping all your personal information onto the information superhighway for anyone and everyone to look at and use......

beginning to wonder if anything is sacred anymore

I should have moved to the mountains years ago and got away from the real world
