Can you tell I'm new at this whole therapy thing?

I've read some posts that mention triggers. But I'm a bit confused about what that is. Is this something I know upsets me when I talk about it or read about it?

It can be something that upsets you and you don't realize it is happening! Or don't realize what causes it. Sometimes if you think about it, you can discover what caused a reaction. Sometimes it takes a long time before you figure that out.

(Assuming I am the expert here, and know what I am talking about! )

Trigger is just at term for anything (could be a song, a color, the way someone says something) that elicits an emotional reaction. It can be conscious or unconcious, but usually what is happening, is that you are reacting to something that has signficantly affected you in the past. I think that on these boards, triggers are often perceived as negative, but there can be positive triggers, too.

The funny part with me and triggers is I do understand now why they happen, but they still happen anyhow...

Knowing the whys helps it to make sense and I am better able to work through them more quickly, though.

Agreed.

Last week, in T's waiting room, he had a new book out. He always has a collection of books to browse through while waiting, and I've been going there so long that I notice immediately if a new one is there. Anyhow, this new book has a title that is very triggering to me. It made me kind of angry--I thought, how can T have this book in his room?! I picked it up and read through some of it and what was inside did not really match the meaning I had assigned to the title. But, I still don't like it. It is definitely triggering for me. I think next time I will turn it face down or something, or put it on the floor under the table.

you know that feeling you get when you are reading something and you suddenly cringe, tighten up, maybe your heart starts beating faster, or your with some one you normally like and they say something that makes you just want to get away from them, cry or slap the crap out of them, or when you are with your therapist and that therapist is asking you to think about something bad that happened to you and you get scared, nervous or even have a panic attack, or want to just run out the door?

Thats what feeling triggered is. in therapy therapist want to know the kinds of things that do this to you so they can help you find ways to make yourself feel better and possibly find ways so that you dont get triggered so much about the things that bother you.
Thanks for this!

amandalouise- Thank you for explaining it to me that way. Totally makes sense to me. I will have to start paying more attention to myself so I can figure out what some of mine are.

I told my former T that it felt like I was being injected with the wrong blood type. It's an internal struggle and it usually carries with it something very meaningful and important.
