There are lots of lots of residential treatment centers for drugs/alcohol or dual diagnosis. I don't have substance abuse problems and I'm really "just" depressed and need to be taken care of. Since there don't seem to be Rent a Loving Mother in-home services , I wonder where on earth I would find a supportive residential setting where I could check out for a while. I don't know that I would actually do it, but it is less drastic than sui. My therapist has been gently suggesting such a placement for quite some time, though she's aware that such a place might not really exist. Not a good one, anyway. Ideas?

In the past several times it was recommend to me--very, very strongly by my T and pdoc--that I enter a day treatment program or a partial hospitalization program.

I'm now about to do day treatment after years of refusing.

It's a 9-5:00 pm program where you go in 5 days a week for various types of treatment. Evaluation about your existing prior treatments, e.g. meds, tests, etc. I'm told it usu. lasts from 3-6 weeks. It's a stabilizing thing along with treatment. So it's outpatient.

Partial hospitalization was explained to me as being similar but that a night or two each week you stay overnight.

These terms are sometimes used interchangeably, and I'm not sure I'm clear on the partial hospitalization set-up, but I'm sure some here know more than I do.

It seems like it will do some of what you want

I spent 20 years looking for the same thing. Though a day care would better fit for me. With Depression, it's 2 or 3 days in the hospital and return to whatever was the problem before.

I was hospitalized and in a day treatment program last year. I don't know where you are (I'm in houston texas) but the place I was at was a mental institution that treated everything including depression and bi polar disorder which was the reason I was there. I stayed for a few weeks and got my meds straight...went to group and therapy sessions and got myself together. The day treatment was from 9 to 5 and consisted of the same thing only I was able to go home and sleep in my own bed...it was good for me because during the day I was having very bad thoughts and didn't need to be alone. Hope this helps.

((Bleah))

Have you tried googling this? I came across a few when I googled.
Some dont SOLEY specialize in depression, but they have programs for it...

Bridges to Recovery
Sierra Tucson--which was mentioned in another thread

http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art54076.asp (this site has a list of 6 centers---Sierra Tucson is listed here as well)

Hope this helps

Good luck

A lot depends on where you are and what kind of medical services are available in your area. I'm lucky - I'm in a major metropolitan area with lots of good hospitals. The dedicated psych hospital I volunteer at, has a specific mood disorders program that has an inpatient unit. I was treated for depression in the same hospital, but in a different unit, a program for women with acute mood disorders and trauma history. I was in for 7 weeks.

Another hospital I go to for addictions treatment has a lot of different outpatient day programs. They have one specifically for depression and anxiety, that runs 5 days a week for something like 12 weeks.

The rehab centre I was in, was a private hospital, and they had a mood disorders program that was inpatient.

So there are options out there - I'd start with my family Dr. and ask for referals.

Sorry that you didn't find anything for Rent A Loving Mother although personally would find that one eerie - how about Adore a Dog? I have a feeling that might be helpful

Anyway, there are a lot of good programs out there depending on where you live. I know from the list above that Walden was on there which is outside of Boston, they have an interesting reputation but it is for eating disorders. McLean Hosptial outside of Boston has an outstanding reputation and a lot of day and inpatient programs. Sierra Tuscon was on the list and someone has a thread on what people have thought of it. Again, it's residential and has a great reputation.

A few years ago I was thinking about doing a program and my T did not agree. He felt that for me it was not the right thing and we met more often for a while. But, I know that they are incredibly helpful and have really been amazing, a friend went through a program and credits it for saving her life.

When I was looking I got this list from US News World report. I hope it is helpful in some way.

If the link does not come up - type into a search engine: US News Report top lists and it will bring you to several. I chose Psychiatry.

I hope you find what you are looking for.

my therapist and pdoc recommended i go into a residential treatment hospital for my bipolar and other dx's. what i found was that because i was living in a stress free environment, for the most part, and had group therapy, art therapy, etc along with my pdoc visits and T visits, it speeded up my recovery process.
i don't know where you live so i'm flying blindly here. i would hope that your T wrould at least be aware of residential treatment centers in your area that are reputable. if you have decent insurance your T can refer you along with a pdoc or doc.
jme, but i'd consider one of these forms of treatment if that's what the T thinks is what you need. good luck and let us know how you're doin' on this search.

in addition to the places jennaorgana mentioned there are places called sheppard pratt (maryland, i think?) and menninger (houston, tx).

something to be aware about these places is that 1. they are very, very costly - even with good health insurance and 2. you will not get particularly individualized care. they are designed like rehabs so the purpose is to get you back to a socially acceptable level of functioning. you will get good care, but it will be very rigid and you shouldnt expect to have a lot of input on the process. if you have a free spirit - ipt is not for you.

can you possibly increase your number of sessions with T? maybe 4 days a week? or look into php or iop at a local psychiatric hospital?
