Does your pdoc talk with you? I have a new Dr, my last one saw me for a few minutes talked about medications and other stuff- maybe 10 minutes. This one gives me 1/2 hour, even though I have a therapist to talk with. I'm glad, feel like he wants to get to know my situation- but its different- not used to it for sure. (I was referred to him by old doc). Just wondering what other peoples situations are?

I have my pdoc who is also my therapist. There is no way I will be telling my life's secrets to two people.
Thanks for this!

My current pdoc sees me for 20 mins. So there is some talk but it's pretty brief and to the point. If I want I can request a 50 min session with him, but he's kind of cold, so I can't see myself talking to him for that long, plus I have a T and an addictions Dr. who I also see for counselling.

My last pdoc, did counselling too, so my appointments with her were always 50 min.

Hey Seaswept...

Funny you should ask...
I've been seeing my pdoc for 8 years now and adore him. I always get to spend time with him and talk to him and he's even done some light therapy work with me especially when I am hospitalized..

Recently, there was a situation with my hospitalization and my T and pdoc talked, and I got cross with my pdoc. Ended up with his saying that ethically or professionally he needed to back up a bit and not go there so much... It broke my heart. Don't know where things stand exactly now, that was my last appt. I will see him again next week.... I still feel very wounded from it and all that happened. He did say that we could still talk about stuff...but I don't know where the lines are anymore..

We'll see... I think it is wonderful when you have a pdoc that really knows what is going on with you and can better diagnose you and judge your state of mind and mood swings and general condition. I don't really trust the 10 min pdocs that just write scripts...

Just my thoughts for what they are worth...

I see a PNP rather than a pdoc. She lets me choose whether I see her for a 20 minute or 50 minute appointment. So yes, we talk to each other quite a bit. I think the better my prescriber knows me, the more she can help. Since I only see her every 3 months or so now, I always choose a 50 minute appointment. 20 minutes just isn't long enough to catch up after several months. I also have a therapist. I have found that PNP and I talk about almost completely different topics than T and I do. She offers different insights and has a much different approach. She is very practical and nuts and bolts! Also, I discuss more medical topics with her, and I get a female perspective. It's great to have input from two completely different mental health professionals.

My appointments with my Pdoc a usually pretty quick. We don't usually delve much into things, but that's because he knows I have a very good T who I see regularly that works on such things. On occasion we'll get into something that's going on, but not usually. He's fantastic with the medical side of things though which is personally why I see him anyway.

After initial one hour appointment, she manages meds, and therapy plan but does not do more then answer a question or two and helped me get into the program I needed. Now 20 or 30 min meetings. Once a month. meds not great yet for the depression.

My pdoc is off the old school and doesn't like to do just meds. He feels that he wants to do therapy also because he wants to know how I am functioning in my life and how the meds are helping or or not which ever the case maybe. He is an excellent T,encourages e-mails, and has helped with so many things from getting previous records to getting a good regular MD.
Thanks for this!

Hi wystieria,
I always thought that too- that he was just a script writer- very nice and down to earth though. I just thought that's they way its done now a days. Before 2005, I hadn't seen one since I was a teen back then it was 50 minutes 1x week.

Good question - I love my PDoc - I spend about 30 minutes with him talking about medications as well as what is going on in my life.

My pdoc gives 20 minutes, but she really talks with me. I have never had a pdoc so interested in my therapy. She can read the notes my T writes, but she always wants to know how therapy is going. I told T it felt weird for a doc to be so interested in me.
