Hey Ya'll

So for one of my classes we were suppose to create something that showcased our identity (not the easiest process for me!!) I created a powerpoint slideshow with pictures and images and quotes and one of my favorite songs playing during it. I played it for the class and they all loved it-and I said to some of my friends in class that I kinda wanted to show it to my T and they all said I definitely should-especially because some of it has to deal with my mental health issues and also my journey into healing with T! So I emailed T to ask him if i would be okay to bring my computer in next session to show him and he said yes! So..now I have to decide when in the session to show him-do I do it first thing or talk about other things first and then show him? any advice on what ya'll think would flow better in the session? thank ya!!

If you do the presentation first, then you won't be thinking about it the whole session and not risk having to interrupt your session to show the powerpoint if you're in the middle of something important.

On the other hand, if you're concerned that the presentation will 'taint' the mood of the session in a way you don't want, then you might wait until the end.

Or if the presentation introduces topics you want to explore in session, then you'd want to do it first.

Bottom line - this is a very personal decision.
Thanks for this!

Hmm very true...I'm thinking of showing it first so that it's not all I'm really thinking about and also so I don't have to interrupt anything...I'm nervous and excited to show him...a part of me wants to back out and not bring it...but I think I would ultimately regret that-I know he will like it so I don't know why i'm so apprehensive!

I once brought in a physical mixed-media collage I had made just for "fun" to show my T (years and years ago) and I still remember it as one of the most interesting, connected, and healing sessions I have ever had. Maybe because it was so big, it would have just been sitting there like the "elephant in the room", so I wanted to show it to her right away. I sort of felt like a kid dragging home an oversized art project to show Mom, but it was actually pretty cool to see her look at it and give me her feedback about it.

I took a combo VCR/TV player to T once so I could show a tape I had had made and we could watch it together and we did that right away. Presumably you want to show T so you two can talk about it! I would have a hard time concentrating on anything else first?

I totally feel like a kid taking in my art project to show daddy...but I kinda like (read: love) feeling like that-it's exciting! I like too that we will sit next to each other on the couch to watch it together!

Yeah I don't think I would be able to concentrate on much else if I waited-and I do want to use it to talk about it...but I also don't want the entire session to be about it...

with me and my sessions I show what ever I bring in to my therapist right at the beginning of the session. that way we dont get on some other topic and never get to what ever I bring in.

I cant tell you what to do in your therapy sessions or when to show this to your therapist. only you know what your sessions are like and only you know when you need to or are comfortable showing your therapist things you take in to therapy.

my suggestion do what ever you feel comfortable doing.

I would vote to show it at the beginning. Your T is expecting it, so it seems natural to get to it right away. If you don't want to spend the whole session discussing it, can you think of anything else you'd like to discuss with him and bring up that subject when you've had enough of the slideshow? I have a feeling he's going to enjoy it very much, and that you'll end up having an interesting and productive session. Good luck!
Thanks for this!

Hey, I'm going to show T some of my iPad 'art' next session. It makes me laugh thinking about it. I'll do it first because, for me, this is just something fun, not anything about my issues.
