As I read posts here, it seems that many posters have been in therapy for quite a long time. When I began this last round I am currently in, I had only planned to be there for a round of cbt and be done with it. I see now that I was not realistic and currently there is no projected date for when I will be "finished," making me think this time around could be years.

I am curious how long posters here have been in therapy since it seems that most of us have some form of incurable but manageable illnesses.

I have been with my current t only 4 months, but before that, years ago, I stayed with my t on and off for 4 years while in college.

This is my third round of therapy -
1st time was for around a year and a half...it kept me stable, but didn't do much else
2nd time, again about a year and a half...again, stable, but that's it.
3rd time - this time - I'm at 2 and a half years, no end in sight at this point, but I'm actually healing. I can see progress, and that thrills me.

Been in therapy i think since I was 6 years old...my mom didnt want child services to suspect she didnt take care of me, and she always wanted to make sure everybody knew I was crazy...so I guess taking me to shrinks and telling them I was sick, and getting medication for my crazy..helped her. idk.

I wasnt allowed to tell the psychologists the truth(due to fear of foster care), but after a lifetime in therapy, only now...am I starting to do actual honest therapy..
where I try not to keep as many secrets.
so in brief .. about 15 yrs

Round five for me, but much the most important!
Eight years with current T, perhaps six months each for the others.

I guess I'm a therapy newbie on the board, this is my first time, and I'm 7 months in. My T says he sees me being in therapy for at least 3-5 years but we will see as time goes on.

This is my third round of therapy. They've been spaced around a decade apart.

1st round was around three years.
2nd was about two years.
This round is I think in its seventh year (I've lost track).

I've had 1 therapist and be seeing her for 2 years now. Heaven (and supposedly I- according to T) only know when I'll be done. I think I'm taking the scenic view through therapy.

Round 1 (11 years old): about 3 or 4 months. I had some old lady as my therapist and we didn't really connect well.
Round 2 (14-16 years old): almost 2 years. She left to go work somewhere else, and referred me to my now-current therapist.
Round 3 (16 years old-present): It's been almost a year. I adore her, even if I'm "waiting for the other shoe to drop".

Since May 2011. Dad booked me in for one appointment with her - I don't know how many sessions he expected me to need, but I dont think he thought it was such a long term thing - and I just thought it would be a huge waste of time. Now? I'm convinced it's THE best thing for me, and I'm aware it's going to take a WHILE! So much to learn, I don't think I'll ever want to quit. If/when my T retires I'm going to be devvoed, methinks!

A year and I thought I'd be well and truly finished by now but actually I think there's a long, long way to go.

That's exactly what I thought when I started - 6 sessions of CBT and I'd be fixed - 2 years on........

I've been going for just under 9 months. Today will be my 17th session. You'd think I'd be LESS frightened of it at this point.

I've been depressed for 4 1/2 years now and seeing Ts for 4 years. Though, to be fair, the first few were 'supportive counselling' and so it was just venting and no progress was made.

My Uni counsellor was for about 8m before I took a leave of absence.
2nd T (private) was for 6m before she got cancer and stopped working, but I wasn't really feeling it with her anyway.
3rd T (charity) was for 4m with a woman I hated.
Then went back to Uni and resumed Uni T for another 6m, until I left my course.

Now I'm seeing CBT T on the NHS and have had 17 sessions in 6m. I'm hoping that I can make some changes with this one, but I'm still very much learning to trust him and open up. I was worried that he'd cut me off at 20 sessions, but apparently he doesn't have to as he's a CPN (community psychiatric nurse) and has a lot of autonomy. He said that, when my pdoc mentioned seeing me, he imagined 8-10 sessions and we'd be done, to which I
