Hi,

I live in central NJ and unfortunately I do not have insurance. I am dealing with a lot of issues now that Ive moved back home to be with a dying parent among other things. I was wondering if someone could reccomend affordable counseling in the central NJ/NYC area such as a clinic. I would be willing to pay about $40-$50 a visit. Thanks.

Check your Yellow Pages under "Mental Health." Catholic Charities, Lutheran Social Services, etc usually operate mental health clinics on a sliding fee scale. If you have a good-sized university nearby, often their psychology depts. run a community clinic, also on a sliding scale.

Good luck.

Welcome to PC marfin! The local hospital social worker can help you (without charge) find resources. I think you've made a good decision to seek therapy while so much is going on in your life! The taking care of another is very stressful, and an outlet for discussion of problems is important! TC

Hey marfin and welcome here..when I needed to find a T and needed a sliding fee, I called therapists from the phone book, explained my situation and asked about sliding fee rates...there is a clinic I know of in Somerville that may help you(I live in northwest jersey)feel free to pm me and I will give you the name...take gentle care...

Another option is to check and see if there is a mental health department in your county--there usually is. You can typically find government listings in the blue pages of your phone book. The local government agency may be able to hook you up with a county worker or contractor for free or at a very reduced cost.

Licensed social workers are usually much, much less expensive than psychologists, and are often just as good.

Do you live by a university? Often times students will take on clients. I'm not sure how much, if anything, this costs, but it might be worth a shot. I have friends and neighboring universities that do this. They are good people, even if you might think they are young.
