About a week ago my psychiatrist dropped me...he didn't give me a reason, he just told me he didn't want to see me again. He said my case would be open for 2 months incase something really serious happened and he dropped me.
My family doctor is fuming...she thinks he dropped me because I recently quit an outpatient treatment program (there is a big story behind that, but I had good reasons). So she is going to be prescribing my current medications (and possibly adding one) until I find a new psychiatrist. In the mean time...I found a psychologist, but I don't know if I can afford him. It's going to cost $130/hour and its frustrating. I work two jobs and go to school and I still can't afford this...I don't want my parents to have to help me out. I am just confused about why my psychiatrist would drop me suddenly. I feel like if it's this easy for him to give up on me, then maybe I should give up on myself. I am feeling angry too, because now I am going to have to go private and OHIP won't cover the cost. I am just so frustrated. |

Im sorry to hear this. Being dropped with no reason feels a cruel thing to do. Cant you get back and find out why he has done this. Should he not have given you someone else to see?

Can you have your physician speak with the psychiatrist and find out why you were dropped? ALso, if a new referrel can be made? Also, if he acted inappropriately then is there a professional licensing group you can report him to?

What he has done is against any ethics that he should of learned in his training. He should in the very least give you a reference to another therapist.
Sorry to hear that this has happened to you. Tobey |

He didn't refer me to anyone. He told me I should look into some kind of community counselling and left it at that.
Hopefully I can find a new one... it's hard to find a private psychiatrist who will treat someone under the age of 18. |

Did he talk to your parents about dropping you? I'm not sure how it works in Canada, but here if you're under 18 the contract is with your parents and they have rights to make decisions and stuff. I don't think it's right that you should be responsible for the bills at your age either.
That really would be frustrating, and I know what it's like to suddenly be dropped and not have a choice about it. Don't give up on yourself! You have your whole life ahead of you. __________________ “We should always pray for help, but we should always listen for inspiration and impression to proceed in ways different from those we may have thought of.” – John H. GRRR. My MD prescribes all my meds for me, I don't use a psychiatrist. Forget him. With the new psychologist, talk to him about fees. Sometimes they will reduce their fee to what they would collect from an insurance company (less than billing fee.) Good wishes with this.

Yeah I am actually really happy with my GP. She said that she'll take care of my medications and will consult with a psychiatrist (she has a friend who is a psychiatrist) about what's appropriate and not appropriate.
In Canada, you take care of your own medical history at 16 (if you want, thats the legal age). I am going to be paying for the psychologist because I feel bad enough that my parents have to put up with me living in their home. I prefer to be independent, especially with my health. I hope I do find a psychiatrist soon. |
