What is it that you're wanting to talk with her about? Most Ts will do at least a brief phone consultation before you go in to see them for the first time.

I would consider it a courtesy not a right, as your are not their patient yet. So like , like , said most will do a consult of some sort.

Well, you can use some of the first meeting as a way of 'interviewing' the therapist.
I asked about experience, education, how long she lived in the area (meaning was she going to stick around), and I asked if she could help someone like me. Very timidly, but I asked ![]() |

Some t's will talk to you briefly over the phone. I went to t in crisis, so no interviewing. However, at the end of the first session, she did ask if I wanted to come back.

I spoke with the one I see on the phone first for about 15-20 minutes before making an appointment. I have only seen ones without receptionists or secretaries so that may have made it easier. But I have spoken to all the ones I have seen by phone first. A couple I declined to make appointments with after the phone interview.

I had a phone consult for about 15 minutes before i made my first appointment with current t, where we asked each other questions. same as SD said, mine doesn't have receptionists/secretaries so when I call her, either she answers or I get her voice mail nothing else. I find it a lot easier that way, I deal only with her.
I think it would be really hard for me to actually show up to a first appointment if i weren't able to speak with the t on the phone beforehand. just my opinion though. |

My first appointment was like an interview. We didn't do therapy at the first meeting. I told him my problem and then let him tell if and how he could help me. If he hadn't been able to help, I wouldn't have continued with him but looked elsewhere.

I had a brief phone conversation first. It was me briefly saying what help I thought I needed. I wasn't therapy savvy enough to ask her questions about it. It took me until the second session to ask what I wanted to know then about her approach, etc.
