This is my main concern for being here... I absolutely HATE parts of my body.. specifically my brain and heart valves.. which is how I got the name LB_mitralvalve.. Littel bugger. I don't like mine becuz it is prolapsed and makes me worry about death. How do I bring this up to my counselor?

Really? Brain and heart valves? I always thought that BDD are about the things you can see not your internal organs...

I had BDD too, it was awful. This reminds me of Hypochondriasis though. But I'm not a professional so that's just a guess...I could be completely wrong! I think I've been reading too much again.

Sorry if I'm not helpful and I hope you good luck.

IS this really BDD or are you just afraid of death? I don't mean "just" in a mean way, as obviously it's a serious issue.

Lits of people live with mitral valve prolapse, it's very common. People don't usually die with it. Most people live very normal lives. My mom does.

I know many people who have BDD where the focus point is how their internal organs look and work/dont work...

and yes a person can see their internal organs just by going through routine physicals that may include things like ultrasounds, xrays, mri's, colonoscopies/endoscopies.....and other exams where the organ is being phtographed/filmed for possible ulcers/valve problems.

one of my relatives has BDD where the focus point is how her esophogus/stomach and intestines work. she would rather have a feeding tube where a liquid IV solution goes directly into blood stream bypassing her digestive system.. she says every time she eats solid foods after having a routine endoscopy and colonoscopy (her physician requires people of certain age bracket to automatically have the exams every 5 yrs) she knows what is going on with each organ for her food to be digested. she hates the process and it causes her to have anxiety and want to just cut those organs out of her body. she cant even look at tv commercials about stomach acid aids or bathroom problems because she hates how those organs look, she hates those organs processes of what they do..everything about those organ..

there are many school aged children who watch health films and have to write papers about the body and how parts of the body look and work who develop phobia's and BDD because they now know what their own internal organs look like and what their organs jobs are in the body..

Thanks, just thought that ppl are ashamed of what they see in the mirror- never knew that it can be about what's beneath the skin too (yeah, I saw some 'documentary' on TV about it with a beautiful girl)- shows how little I know about mental illnesses.

no need to be embarrassed.. we all learn about things at our own rate. I know about it because of college psych classes, having a relative with it and through my job. I have learned lots of things too from being here on psych central and reading about things.
