I certainly took on a negative personality. Influenced by my abuse & the area I lived in as a child.

I use to believe we stayed who we were. That who we areis something out of our control. That unless it fit the 'profile' I had come to strongly identify with then it couldn't belong to me.

I read about re-parenting in therapy. But I think it's just a place where we get to redifine our personality.

No wonder this can take yrs. imagine all the day by days we took things in and fitted ourselves to them.

I realise I'm so busy sticking to who I think I am, that I don't take the time to really see who I am.

Hi Mouse,
I agree. It takes a lot of work and time to change the patterns we got from growing up in unhealthy families and circumstances. That's why having a positive influence like a genuinely caring therapist is such a good thing, because it can give us things we so needed but didn't get growing up. Also attending ACOA or other support groups is helpful too as you can meet supportive peers who are going through the same thing.

You can't change the habits of a lifetime overnight.

No but you also can't change if you're not willing too either

But change is more than just change. It is leaving what we adopted to work for us at that time. It's no wonder we fear and defend against change because we are leaving the known for an unknown. I think it takes a while and many small steps to get there.

I experience change as something that happened whilst I was busy looking the other way.
