She seems to remember everything I ever say. Is there a special technique she uses to remember all this stuff, or is it all her?

My T has an ok memory. She takes notes and has known me over 5 years. I dont think her memory is amazing really. Not that its bad either. She kinda should remember important stuff given I see her 3 hours a week. Some people may have awesome memories but I assume its because they take notes.

My therapist should be jealous of my memory! I must be part elephant. Nothing slips past me, I have excellent recall and often bring up things he has said months and months ago.
I even said to him in a joking way: If you don't mean something, don't say it. Because I'll remember it! ![]() |

I am jealous of my T's memory! But she also takes notes which I'm sure she reviews each time before I come in for session. I like that she remembers because then I don't have to repeat myself or explain the same thing over and over.

Ha! Not really. She DOES have a good memory, but so do I - my friends always go on about how I remember the teeniest details years after stuff happened.
ETA: Actually, maybe I'd envy her her capacity for emotional memory. To hang on to good feelings? I'm not so hot at that! |

I am not jealous or envious of anything surrounding the therapist.
The one I see has an awful memory.

Mine has a pretty good memory which I truly appreciate, but I wouldn't say I'm jealous of it.

Mine does have a very good memory too maybe from reviewing notes before hand, but that does explain it all. hmmm. I don't feel jealous. I just never thought about it before.

My T's memory isn't that good. He sometimes forgets things, but then again, sometimes he surprises me by remembering something I did not think he'd remember. Nothing to be jealous about at any rate.

I have a better memory than my T - when I'm not dissociating from memories, anyway. He said most people think he has a good memory but compared to me it's like he has Alzheimer's.

I've got a better memory than my T... it's usually me going "We've already talked about this" - or at least I think it in my head as I don't really care too much about talking about it twice. But he forgets what activities he was talking about and what stories he's shared with different clients. He clearly knows this as he goes "Did we talk about X?" and I go "No" and usually "but I already know about X anyway" if it's something like a story. haha.

My t has an incredible memory, she does not take notes but she does save emails. I wish i could remember details like she does. I remember more big picture stuff.

Mine does have an amazingly good memory. She almost never takes notes, including after sessions and she remembers almost everything I've talked about. It doesn't really blow me away, because I'm the same when it comes to remembering details about people. I can remember lots of tiny details my therapist mentioned to me about herself over four years ago when I first started to see her. One thing she mentioned was thinking she'd be good at being a therapist because she knew she was good at remembering details. I used to work in a job where I spent a small amount of time with patients. I can still remember stories attached to particular people that I only met for under 5 minutes. So I could giver her a run for her money, I'd say. I think some people are just wired that way. I don't consciously try to remember everything that someone tells me about themselves, but I usually do anyway. I can be really forgetful when it comes to other things (leaving things behind, forgetting to pass a message on unless I write it down).
I saw another therapist who didn't have a good memory for details. She mentioned needing to take notes, and she always did. She sometimes surprised me with the way she remembered the big picture in a really intuitive sort of way, almost as if she understood something that had happened that wasn't explicit or consciously experienced by me. Even though she didn't remember all the details, I really appreciated the way that she did remember me. |

Ha ha ha! My t has told me certain really touching (to me) childhood stories. When I mentioned them later, he said that other people didn't remember these stories. I felt kinda bad for him, like everybody talks to him but nobody listens to him; he does for everybody but who does for him?

For the most part, and for the important things, my T has a good memory. I think it's part of their job to do the best they can with that. For some minor things, she has misremembered though.

Yes. It's called post-session notes.

It is only one thing about T that I am amazed by and jealous of... but yes, I think it is quite amazing too, and that they make use of notes written later, and that it is such profound evidence of their commitment to us.

I am jealous. My T has a shocking memory and I catch him stifling yawns all the time, which I pay him out for to make light of it, and he then tries to deny which makes for an awkward moment because I hate liars. I don't get to see him that often and he acts like I need to recap everything nearly every time I see him.
