One of mine T came right out and told me so................ she said:

That IF I did not see about getting back on medicine then she could no longer see me as a patient - I took a year break and worked on me (and) then I talked to my GP about some medicine when I felt it was needed and then I returned to my T for one last year of counseling.

Lets see -

"you seem to have more problems then I am qualified for so how about we set up an appointment with so and so"

"Im going on maturnity leave and will not be working in the field for at least a year so its time to start looking at our options"

"Hi Im in hawaii and have gotten a new job so I wont be back but so and so is covering my caseload"

"I can't go into details right now but I can't be your counselor I am leaving the agency and we only have a week to choose another one so.."

With my last therapist I wasn't terminated. It was a mutual choice that we find someone else for therapy and overturn our client therapist relationship to a friendship relationship.

The best way is for them to give you some notice that for whatever reason it is time to work towards termination. Then go over with you the goals that you have worked toward and what you have accomplished and how you are going to maintain your progress and what resources are available to you if you still need anything else, either now or in the future.

The reason for termination can make a difference - whether it is because your goals have been accomplished and you don't need therapy anymore, or if you aren't making progress, or because the therapist isn't able to continue for their own reasons. If the therapist can't continue, then they usually help you to get set up with a new therapist.

I haven't been through termination done the right way though. I've been left hanging with little or no notice a few times, and have just on my own stopped making appointments. Good termination and aftercare/followup really is important though.

Well mine just flat out told me that he didnt think that he could help me the way that i needed. Though it may seem very blunt, he helped me get transferred to someone more qualified to help me.
