Hi, I've been thinking about this for sometime and may well bring it up in therapy, but I think I wondered what other people thought.

I usually feel like I belong even when alone. I think I may be perceived as odd or, more kindly, eccentric, but not that I don't belong.

Being adopted, this comes up a lot for me. It's not just simply about belonging. It's about being able to take it for granted too.

I don't really "belong" in my family. I am very different from all of them. But I do belong with my friends completely and I feel comfortable with them.

CBT T recently bugged me to join a meetup.com group. I got frustrated because none of the groups seemed to fit, and I start to feel like I don't belong anywhere.

I feel I belong when I'm with family and friends. Without a doubt, two years ago I would have had the exact oppose answer before therapy.

I feel like i belong on the bus. That doesnt sound quite right though! But i remember the first time i took it as an adult in this town - i thought everyone was looking at me, wondering why doesnt she have a car? Silly. But now i love the bus. I like when i rent a car for the day, but i BELONG on the bus.
Thanks for this!

I answered yes with family but that isn't really accurate. I feel like I belong with my husband and kids, my best friend from college and her family and my other best friend. I consider my best friends sisters from another mother...so I guess they are family.

The rest of my family I feel like an outsider though.

I answered no because it always feels like I am out of place.

Thank you so much for all your answers. I don't feel like I belong anywhere. I'm really struggling with this and it is really helpful to hear from others.

Still not quite sure where I fit in.

Sometimes I feel I owe the world an apology for even existing.

We are all children of this universe and we have a right to be here.

It's sad that others have caused us deep enough wounds that we sometimes feel we don't.

I do know I've learned to not waste my time trying to fit in where I'm not wanted or treated well.

While I have a couple of close friends I enjoy hanging out with occasionally ...

I'm most contented just being with myself.

Thanks for this!

No, never. I don't even feel like I 'belong' in my own skin. I have no idea of who I am, what I want or where I belong. Maybe I don't belong anywhere, maybe i'll always feel as though I don't belong.

I should nuance my previous response. I sometimes feel that I belong, when I am with certain of my relatives, or sometimes in the choir, when we are performing something we have rehearsed for a long time. But some groups I used to feel a tremendous sense of belonging in no longer feel like that at all. So it is a transitory feeling.

T actually described today how he understood my feelings, like being the only human on a planet far away. I had to correct him and say that in fact I feel that I am surrounded by humans, it's just me who is inhuman.

I used to belong with my mother when she was alive, because we were a team and it was us against the world.

Nowadays, I belong only in short snaps. Places like work or performing or out socializing when my mind is ok, I belong just fine. Aimlessly being by myself with my fears on a loop, I belong nowhere and with no-one.

I used to feel that I did, but don't anymore. Not even slightly.

I answered No on the poll, as it was definitely the most appropriate answer for me. I would prefer if the poll were worded as Sometimes, Usually, and Never though....just my opinion.
