During my last session T and started to discuss signs that I was experiencing true medical depression vs. a situational depression. I am suppose to be making a list of things that I noticed recently before I admitted I was depressed and how bad it was. T knew I was a having a very difficult time but didn't know how bad until I finally decided to change my meds with Pdoc and rated my mood on a scale of 1-10 and then I told T.
Knowing the difference is very difficult for me as there is so much in my life that could cause situational depression... T said if it lasts longer than 2 weeks then we need to really look at depression. It had been almost 2 YEARS for me...it just got progressively worse to the point that I was completely numb. So what are you clues that you are depressed? __________________ |

Incredible, unrelenting fatigue.
Constant sense of hopelessness and helplessness. Loss of interest in things that normally would have kept me interested. Inability to concentrate for more than very short periods of time (notice this mostly in reading) Sleep disturbance (sometimes insomnia; sometimes excessive sleep) Deep despair; often resulting in suicidal thinking (These are pretty much the defined characteristics of major depression. They seem to fit me completely when I am depressed.) |

Very tired, body feels "heavy", sad, hopeless, overwhelmed by the smallest things, sleepless nights, lots of anxiety, restlessness, feeling abandoned and alone, body aches, stomach problems, lack of appetite, can't focus, no motivation, and when it gets really bad, suicidal thoughts.

Symptoms would be: --Despair, hopelessness, thinking the world would be better without you --Intense flashes of anger and no place to express it --Tiredness, boredom with things that used to bring joy, sleeping a lot or not at all, or sleeping at the wrong times (awake all night, sleep all day) --A growing To Do list, bills unpaid, mail piling up, not showering, an inability to cope with the annoying details of modern life |

One would think because I work in pscyh this would be easy.
What we came up with so far.. Hopeless and Helpless: Feeling like my life sucked but not being able to do anything about it. Not wanting to live (not usually suicidal for me) and hoping I would never wake up but knowing that I would never do anything to kill myself as my kids mean to much. Having a very hard time with change in plans...If I had to pick my kids up early or late or if events were canceled feeling stressed to the point of tears. Feeling numb... For most being tired and lacking sleep is a trigger but I have suffered for insomnia since I was preggo with my youngest child who is almost 13 now. There must be more though __________________ |

The one thing that I notice when my meds start not working is that I feel like there is a very heay weight pushing down on me all of the time. When the AD's are doing their job I do not feel that weight.
