I went to my old psychologist for the first time after a long break. I'm currently feeling very unstable due to extreme hormonal changes (I think this is the reason at least, I'm recovering from anorexia and just got my period after years without it). My mood is up and down in extreme ways: I've panic attacks, I get exaggeratedly happy and I am deeply depressed, all in the curse of a week.
![]() Anyway, I sat there and we were talking about something upsetting my mom said and she asked me if my mom had been a mom or more like I had been her friend. I felt I didn't want to go into that, I was feeling irritated, so I said "look, she was fine with me, I survived didn't I?" and then, 5 seconds after, I started to laugh (don't know why!!!!, it wasn't funny) and I couldn't stop. I had a laughter attack and laughed louder and louder and finally I laughed for real at my own laughter. She was looking at me looking very serious/worried. We tried to restart the talking but I couldn't talk! 15 minutes of this madness and the session was over so I had to leave. I left the office laughing. I'm scared, nothing like this has EVER happened to me ![]() Thoughts?? similar experiences?? I'm scared about what she will think ![]()

I'm so sorry that happend. That sounds really distressing.
Have you ever looked up pseudobulbar affect. It can cause uncontrollable laughing and crying. It's a neurological condition, so it would be more likely if you had some kind of neurological complication with you ED like a stroke, or if you had some other neurological even during your life. I suggest that you discuss what happened with you T the next time you see them. Here's a link about pseudobulbar affect Involuntary Emotional Expression Disorder | Psych Central |

Like you said ... your hormones are going crazy right now which can prompt all kinds of things to happen; exhaustion, stress and nervousness are all things that have contributed to times I've ended up having laughter attacks
When do you see your psychologist next? If you are feeling concerned are you able to phone before hand ![]() |

If you do, it won't be something you have to suffer with. There are medications you can take for this condition. Try not to worry about it and address the possibility with your Psychologist next time you see her.

I would look at the statement you put in bold - look, she was fine with me; i survived, didnt i? - and the fact that you are recently recovering from anorexia. You sound like you have mixed feelings of anger and relief.
I once laughed so hard in therapy that i flipped myself over backward in my chair, so these things definitely happen! My t will usually laugh with me though. |

This sounds like you were so anxious and afraid that you started laughing as a defense mechanism.

hi, I'm set to meet her next Tuesday, I'll bring it up, if she doesn't first. I was quite exhausted as I had an anxiety attack yesterday and slept only a few hours.

Yes, that was my first thought. I usually control myself and just change subject when I want to change subject though, now I just flipped...

This was my first thought too, I have done the same thing while talking with T usually when I am very nervous about something we're discussing.

It does sound like you were nervous or anxious, I know I laugh none stop when I feel nervous and it can be embarrassing.

This happened to me last week, not in therapy but afterwards at home. I started laughing at something and then couldn't stop, then it turned to tears felt really weird and a bit scary. I put it down to a release of emotions.
