I am having some serious issues regarding my therapist. Is there anyone out there who is a therapist and can give me their perspective?

Hello, Bleu With No Clue, and welcome to Psych Central! We don't have any therapists here who would be in a position to answer your question.

However, some of us members can address it from our own experiences and having therapists as friends and such.

What would you like to know?

Well my mother recently passed away, and I've been seeing my therapist for almost three years now. I'm a freshman in college, and a division one student athlete, so I have an immense amount of pressure. I'm aware of transference. I guess what I'm getting at is, is it too much to tell my therapist I absolutely adore her as a motherly figure?

I recently lost my mother, and it's been incredibly difficult. My therapist, Jen, and I have been really close. I have been seeing Jen since I was a sophomore in high school, and I just finished my freshman year of college so we're extremely close. I am also a division one athlete at the University of Florida, where I run track, and my mother never missed a meet. So last week before a meet I was balling my eyes out in Jen's office; long story short she later showed up to UF with her husband and two sons to cheer me on! Is it wrong to tell Jen I want her to be like my mom, and that I wish she could be so badly?

Not wrong to tell her. It will undoubtedly be a helpful conversation for you.

No, it's not wrong. It's so common and she will be totally okay with you telling her that. I am so sorry for your loss.

Thank you so much every one. Next time I see her, I will make it a point to make these feelings clear.

I thought of one of my therapists as a mom, especially when she said she was "re-parenting" me. I would even jokingly call her "mom," and I became very attached to her. If you read about what's called "transference," then you'll see that it's very common. And therapists know all about it. By all means, as was said, tell her. She will understand.
