So, I've been seeing current T for about 6 months. I thought I was making progress. But last session, T said she had "run out of tools in her box" and was not sure what to say for quite a bit of the session. At the end of the session, we normally schedule the next one right away but she seemed really hesitant and asked if I wanted to text her to let her know if I wanted another session. I said I would but I'm a bit confused. Was T trying to tell me she's had enough? Thanks for any suggestions...

she may not know what to do. i don't think it's that she's had enough but maybe you need to see someone with more skills than she has. she's not handling it well it sounds like though. maybe talk to her about it. go to a session and ask if she'd like to refer you to a t that she feels would be more adept at handling your stuff.

my t has told me he's referred clients to other ts just because either he doesn't have the skill set or there's a personality clash. he wants to see people helped, not have his ego stroked. i think it's a sensible, professional decision. i mean, think about medical doctors, they aren't experts at everything. so sometimes they have to send you elsewhere.
Thanks for this!

Sounds like she may not feel she has the skills to help you. Perhaps she is thinking you might benefit from a different therapist or therapy approach. Certainly something you need to talk to her about.

An old T of mine said something similar to this. She was an OCD and anxiety therapist but I have psychosis so in the end she had to stop therapy because she didn't know how to deal with my issues...maybe it would be worth getting a new T?

Thanks a lot for the replies - that really helps. What you've said makes perfect sense. T is attached to my school but a few months ago I found out that I have motor neurone disease. So T has been helping me process my feelings about that but I guess it's time to find a T who is used to dealing with the illness part. It kinda sucks because I really like my T! Thanks again everyone.
