My T suggested today, that in addition to Individual, I should start attending Group too?
I have never attended Group. I expressed my confidentiality concerns (I live in rural area) and my T advised me I only had to share what I choose. My T said mainly I would get some additional skill building and coping skills..... Any advice/experiences/suggestions? Thanks for reading my post! ![]() |

i think it sounds like a great idea. i haven't done group T but was in a 12-step group. hearing others' stories was really helpful, i felt less alone in my struggles and heard things shared that i hadn't really voiced in my own life yet. in group T i think you'll have the added benefit of people expressing a different view of you than how you see yourself. at the least it can't hurt to give it a try.

I think you should give it a shot. It may help you feel less alone.

I'm in the process of - maybe, probably - starting group therapy in addition to individual therapy. My T is all for it. I see the potential for group to help me overcome shame (it's a csa group) and also let me talk about the sexual impact of csa which is difficult for me to do with my male T. But I am finding the whole prospect pretty scary.
In case it is useful, my experience so far is first having a short phone call with the T who runs the group, then having a individual session with her, then she talked to my T. And now I'm supposed to set up another individual session with the group T to before joining the group. Frankly, the whole process feels like a job interview. But I understand the reasoning behind these steps - for her to make sure I am a good fit for the group - and it also gives me a chance to get used to the idea. |

Group therapy helps some people but it is not for everybody. Remember that it is your choice - your T can suggest it but you decide whether it is right for you or not.

I have done it, group and individual . It worked out well in the beginning for me. It helps with the in between sessions. I'm not much of a group type.
Try it you may find lots of benefits. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

From what I've heard and from experience, I think group therapy is great, sometimes even more helpful than individual therapy. It does depend on the group itself, much like individual T depends on the therapist. Still its a different dynamic and may take getting used to. It is your choice and if you feel like taking a chance, it may be well worth it.

Mine suggested an eating disorder group. First, I don't really think I have an eating disorder. (Denial is not just a river in Egypt, right?) I mean I'm over weight, and it's related to depression and all.
Anyway, she's an hour away, the group is also an hour away, I can't be back and forth twice in one day. So I looked locally. There is one, I can't make it. But the place has a weight list, uhem, wait list for starting new groups. So I think I'm going to get on the list for a eating disorder group and a depression group if they start an evening session. We'll see. They need at least 10 for a new group. |
