Does anyone have Medicare? Just moved to a new state, California, from Kansas. My new T here is claiming that Medicare only pays for on appointment a week here. Not so in Kansas--they paid for as many appointments my treaters deemed necessary, as long as I didn't see a mental health pro more than once a day.
I am having a dysphoric manic episode right now and asked if I could see him twice a week for a while. So, now I am paying out of my own pocket for the second appointment. I have paid for 2 appointments so far. And I really can't afford it.
I got suspicious and on Wed 11/26 I called Medicare and found out they pay for as many appointments a week as your doctor bills--in every state.
I have an appt. on Mon 12/1 at 4 pacific time. I am going to confront him, then.
Does anyone have an opinion on my situation? What do you all think I should do?

Hi and welcome to PC!

If you repeat your post here in the forum below, I'm sure you'll get a lot of replies.

I'll reply here...yes, Medicare is a national program so it is the same in every state. Maybe your T was just misinformed? Definitely talk to him and tell him what Medicare told you when you called them.

See you down below

DocJohn
I had a few bad experiences with therapists and finally in desperation flew to San Francisco to talk with someone I admire greatly, sort of just for the experience and to bounce some things off him, (because I could). Amazing to me that he consented to see me. He's a busy guy. In addition to talking about a bunch of existential stuff I was curious about, he recommended a therapist for me in my home city. That has worked out very nicely and I am so appreciative of that.

Seems like a long way to travel to find that right therapist but it worked for me.

Help,
I'm new to this forum but looked for it because I am encountering terrible difficulty letting go of a former therapist with whom I worked for 10 years. Circumstances made it necessary for me to give this therapist to my son who was dealing with major suicidal issues. At first, because we were down to maintenance work-- this really wasn't that difficult. But over the last few months it's gotten terrible, and I miss my old therapist constantly. He did make it very clear that he was unable to treat two members ofthe same family, so there's no going back, and frankly my son needs the work too much for me to ask him to find a new therapist.

Yet I hate the fact that I had to make this wretched choice. We spent so much time dealing with me recovering and gaining stability after diagnosis with bipolar II, and we did delve quite a bit into the transference stuff, which I really felt like I was over to a great degree. Now I feel like I've lost the central being in my life and I am in so much grief it's affecting every aspect of my existence.

I am working with a new therapist, as per my agreement with my old one, and she's pretty good. But there's nothing like the comfort level I had with my former therapist, and I feel so extremely alone, I just don't what to do.
This has made former destructive thoughts and feelings come to mind, that I spent a long time getting rid of.

If anyone out there has had experience losing a treasured therapist, or could offer any advice (I've read just every article online that I could find already), it would so help. I just did not expect the extent of my grief and I fell like I've lost me and my path to sanity in the process.

Help and thanks in advance

I wanted to post this here in the sticky because it is very important.

http://www.dsm5.org/Pages/Default.aspx

The DSM-IV is going to be updated soon. The reason I am posting this is because they actually WANT input from people on the changes that are planned. This is NOT research. It is because these changes are needed and the medical community has decided (finally!) to LISTEN to what people who have these considerations need. I encourage people to check on their DX or concerns and see what changes are planned in the new DSM-V . And then if you have any input for the experts, this is now the time to share. The DSM-V will be used as the standard for the mental health care in our future. So this is very big.

So, I just got started at this site, and I've got a question- what is psychotherapy? Is it like therapy where you talk about your feelings and stuff? Cuz I have done that before and I hated it. In fact, all three times that I have done it is because my parents made me.

And, does posting your question on this site and getting an answer from one of the people that is supposed to answer it count as psychotherapy?

Pretty much. The quality can depend greatly on the therapist, though.

It might, but we are not professionals, so take what we say with that in mind!

I've been going to a psychologist off and on for the past 2 yrs. More regularly since this past summer, and although I 'know him' I'm still not very comfortable with telling him things. I have tried looking for another therapst, with not much luck.
Any suggestions?

Hello all,
Still debating if I really, really want to post here, but I figured at the very least I could post an intro. I've been seeing a psychologist for just about a year and a half. I've worked with two other therapists in the past, but never really got out of the therapy what I needed to. This time...the experience has been very helpful. It's been emotional, difficult, frightening, but I'm finally making progress. The previous two times I saw a therapist, my family was aware of it, and while I was never comfortable talking with my family about my experiences, I knew the option was there. This time, I'm doing the therapy completely for me...and no one, not friends nor family, knows that I'm seeing a therapist. I'm mostly very okay with that, but occasionally, I think it might be nice to talk to someone about my experience. So, here I am, hoping that this community might be the place to share some of what I'm going through.
