My T told me today that she only has one email address. She gets personal and work emails at the same address. I'm wondering if that's unusual or not. It came up because of our new agreement that she answers all my emails unless I tell her she doesn't have to.

This past 2 weeks she answered my first email. I wrote a second one and said she didn't have to respond. So she didn't.

In my session today, I asked if she received it. At first she didn't remember. Then she told me how she gets a lot of emails every day, and if she doesn't answer right away, they go off the screen. So, when I wrote that she didn't have to respond, she forgot about it. That's when I asked, "You don't have a separate work email address?" and she said "no."

Then I told her I kind of wished I had asked for a response because I missed it. She says it's really important how I felt at not getting a response, that it's a pattern. I said I worry that something may have happened to her, that she's not there. It's not that I start thinking she doesn't care about me. It's just wanting to know she's there. She said she could answer briefly as soon as she reads it, so I don't worry, but I'm not sure I like that idea. So I said "just do the best you can, and it will be good enough!" She smiled. She liked that answer.

I had a very productive session even though she only held my hand for about 5 minutes. I was afraid she would judge me about something, but of course she didn't and I was very relieved. I'm at such a good place in therapy now, which makes me afraid something bad will happen. I am so very grateful for my T!

I don't think it is unusual for a therapist to have only one email address, that way they don't have to check two everyday. I, however, have never had a counselor that gave me and email address to communicate with them. I had to wait until the next session. So for me it's odd that one would read and answer emails.

haha my T seems to have two different work email addresses! I'm pretty sure things had been changed around at one point. I only even noticed because I apparently have sent/recieved emails from both accounts! Based on what I know of him, I wouldn't really be surprised if he doesn't have his own personal email though.

It's great you could have this open chat with your T about your email needs. She sounds wonderfully supportive.

My T only has one email address that I am aware of. Especially since it is a combo of her and her son's name. Also I once received an email that made no sense to me but was obviously was for a close friend....she apologized repeatedly..even though it said nothing person or anything.

My T doesn't have a work email. I have her personal email but I'm the only client she has ever given it to. I didn't ask for it. She just felt like I needed it and she was right. I email her regularly and she always responds.

To my knowledge, t has only one email address. That's the understanding I got when she gave it to me a few years ago. Mine answers emails about 90% of the time - briefly - in a sentence or two. She's only ever replied first thing in the morning.
