I've been in psychotherapy for 16 years. I've felt in the past that therapy only gives the impression that it does something, and that medication is the best treatment. Now i realize there is no 'one' right treatment.

I think i'm finally getting something done in counseling rather than spinning my wheels. My therapist calls me on my stuff, and seems to be getting through to me. I've established mostly good relationships with T's in the past, but I ended up using self-help books, journaling, and, prior to getting sober in AA, alcohol.

I'm afraid I'll lose my therapist, because it seems "if it's too good to be true, it probably is". I'm afraid she'll retire, or get sick, etc.. The only other therapists who seemed to have gotten through to me were Clay, and he ended up thinking i was better than i appeared after only 2 months in counseling, and Nora, who ended up passing on from cancer, and saw me only for a month.

I've been with my current therapist since May. Wasn't i due for a good therapist? I'm dealing with issues now that weren't dealt with well by previous therapists. Something is working, finally.

Let me know what you think!

I've also found that it takes a long time to figure out how to make therapy work. Your current therapist reflects that progress, I think. As for being afraid it's too good to be true, you can't do much about her health, but have you asked her when she plans to retire? Also, if you've been doing therapy for 16 years, you know there are ups and downs, but as long as it's mostly forward movement, that's got to be good?

And yes--you were due for a good therapist. I'm glad you found one.
