Does anyone else find it difficult to stick with therapy? I generally last a few months and then find a reason to stop going.. Usually I feel I don't really need it or that it's a waste of money. Then I impulsively tell my T I will no longer be going, and then within a few weeks I start to feel down and really lost and want to return again.

It's a really annoying cycle. Can anyone relate?

Yes I can. I think that sometimes progress can feel slow, or it may be that things start to feel difficult.

Is it the same T that you return to?

Yes, and I wanted to try therapy with a new T to start fresh, but I've tried a few different Ts and I couldn't click with any of them

Do you do this type of thing with other people? Do you avoid?

It's quite an investment of time and energy. I think it's natural to need a break from it from time to time.

I am the champion at "I quit therapy".

I have seen other T's but click with this one best.

My T has worked hard to keep me in therapy, in the end by entering into a contract not to just quit but to give at least 2 months notice. It has worked for me and has been useful in making me go even when I didn't want to.

I have stretched out the periods between sessions because I am doing well and need to practice rather than be treated. But I do note all difficulties and what I have done to deal with these, whether successful or not successful for later discussion. Otherwise I think I would find it difficult to continue at the original frequency. We have a safety proviso that I can ring if I get into distress, but I tend not to have episodes now.

I reduced my frequency due to work schedule and not needing it that often. I still need it so I don't quit but I would if it was useless or my t lost her mind the way I am reading some t's do on here

I usually stick too long with a bad T or therapy. My current T is good, but in the last few months I have thought about quiting many times. Besause it would be too hard or I felt too much shame to talk to her or I just thought it was all useless.

Yes, I can relate. I think sometimes it "feels" easier to quit therapy than deal with the emotions and difficult memories that may result. The problem is that being numb doesn't allow you to experience the good things in life or move on.

I think talking about not wanting to talk can be a good place to stay in therapy. Don't feel you have to talk about 'it'. Believe me, there lots of things we can talk about until we feel safe/sure enough.
