This question may seem a little silly, but I have no experience with psychotherapy and have my first appointment coming up. I feel kind of nervous and want to have an idea of what will happen.

During the first appointment, you'll probably fill out paperwork about your insurance, personal info, health info, reason you're there, if you haven't already.
The therapist will likely ask why you're there and talk mostly about what's going on now, maybe asking about your background too, time permitting. Also, it's a job interview for the therapist- remember that you are the paying customer and they are the potential hired help, so as much of the appointment as you want should be about the therapist answering your questions, such as what style they have, how experienced they are, how sessions are structured, whether they allow phone calls or emails and when, anything else you want to know. Given the medications you're on, you may also want to discuss if they will want to be in contact with your psychiatrist or if you want them to be. |
