I go every Tuesday morning to a depression and anxiety group that's 90 minutes long. Most weeks its only 2-3 of us, but today there were 5, 2 which were new. I feel bad that I get frustrated when there's new people, because it takes up time to go over disclosures and how the group works. Then one of the new members came late, so that took up more time. By the time we began, we had only 60 minutes left, so about 10 minutes per person.
Every session we have about 5 questions we check in on, and we are allowed to elaborate on our answers if we need to. The two new people didn't go by the checklist, and talked for 15 minutes each, plus another one talked that long too. That left me and the last guy 15 minutes between the two of us, which I don't think was fair. I get that its supposed to be our time for everyone, but I felt like the therapist didn't keep the others on track, and just let them ramble on. I am having a rough time, and started crying as soon as it was my turn, but felt like I had to rush my check in to give the other guy time to as well. I dont know, I'm probably way over sensitive about this, and next week might be better. I just left feeling like I shouldn't have went, and have to wait until next week for an actual therapy session unless I go to their walk in crisis center. Thanks for letting me rant. |

That sucks!! I would want to give them a partial payment corresponding to the partial time you got. Can you email the group t and complain? Where is her dinger to cut people off? Why is she so out of control?

Yes, that sucks! I've also been in group therapy. I wasn't so keen on talking myself, but I found it really annoying when the T didn't keep hold of the time. Hopefully this will go better for you next week.

Haha sorry, had to laugh at the dinger comment. Thankfully my insurance is Medicaid so groups don't cost me anything, so guess I shouldn't expect much. I might call her this week, and see if I quickly check in about what happened.

My old group leader had some sort of bowl she used during relaxation, which wasn't very relaxing.

The only therapy groups I ever went to were free-form. It was a group conversation, not a series of timed monologues.
