Have you asked your therapist or psychiatrist why they chose to become a therapist or pdoc?
If you did, when? At te beginning of therapy or while you were already in therapy for some time?

I've never asked any of my T's that question. I know some people aks a potential T or a T who they just started seeing questions. But I've always been very shy and anxious and I didn't ask questions. I've been seeing my current T for quite some time, but I'm still afraid to ask questions. And I've been seeing pdoc since the beginning of this year and I haven't ask him a single question. Most of what he tells me is clear to me, so.

But I'm curious why they chose to be a T or pdoc.

I did. She said she was always predisposition-ed for it and had a strong desire to be a therapist to help others. I asked about 3 months into therapy with her. She explained why on a larger scale, which I greatly appreciated.

I have now been with her for a year and have multiple sessions per week and I still find myself asking 'basic' questions about her, her job, etc. and she always answers them. Not sure if my reply helps but thought I'd answer.

We had a discussion about our choice of careers. It started because we were talking about parents wanting kids to have some particular careers yet ( we were talking about my daughter at first)we chose careers that we wanted and loved and involved helping others even if is not what our parents wanted. She said she always liked psychology and wanted to help others so she became a therapist.

I did with the first one and he said he has a "gift" for helping people. I laugh about it now because he most certainly does NOT have a gift for helping people. My new therapist said he really should not be working with people.

Yes, your answer helps. I'm afraid my T or pdoc will find it weird or suspicious if I now start asking questions, since I haven't asked anything in the past 8 months.
So I wondered how others do it.

She just answers no matter the question or how much I have seen her. I don't think she finds anything weird or suspicious she answers. It's a very open relationship from her end as well (or so it seems to be). I wish you luck, I find it healing to ask and be answered like I'm a human who's inquiries matter.

Yes, she said it was easy money from the gullible. Just kidding. It seems irrelevant so no. I am not paying good money to talk about her when there is a much more interesting topic at hand - me.

i asked my T this recently for the first time and weve been working together for 5 yrs. he told me because his therapy really helped him and he wanted to help others. he also said he used to want to be a catholic priest but i guess decided for something w/o religion. T is not a christian but (i think) was raised catholic. but im not sure what/if he is anything now.

Yes, I've asked all my MH clinicians.

For pdoc, it's because he was amazed by the power of the mind.

T1 had an uncle with depression.

T2 quipped that she has a sign on her head saying "Tell me all your problems."

I didn't ask she told me one day though. She said she enjoyed helping people and ended up being the friend that everybody went to for advice. So she decided if she was going to do it anyway she could do it and get paid.

I did, about a year into our work together. She said because she was always fascinated on how the mind worked and she loves helping others.
