I have a really bad memory, and I don't undedStand. I don't remember much of my childhood or teenage years. I don't understand why. I mean sometimes I wonder if something bad happened to me but if it did wouldn't I only forget a small portion not everything. It seems like my memory is not working. When my kids (I don't have kids) will ask me when what was your childhood like? What will I say? I avoid speaking about this too much in therapy because I don't want my t to encourage things in my mind. What do you think? Do u have experience with this? sometimes I don't even my remember 2-3 years ago. My friend said remember that time we went to x x and I said no I don't remember. When my close friends get married, and I'll have to say a memory that I think of. What will I say?

Have you been thru any significant traumas in your life?

My memory is pretty bad also.

Might be worth doing some medical investigation. THere are apparently correctable causes including: nutrient deficiencies, heavy metal toxicity, sleep disorder, some medications.

I have an atrocious memory! My memories start around 10-11, and there are a ton of things my friends go "Remember when we did this?" And i am like "Umm, no." Ha. It drive me batty, but my mom also has a terrible memory so i wonder if it is genetic. I've talked to my T about this, and she hasn't said much. I just learn to live with it.

It could be any of the things mentioned. Personally, I don't know how to measure whether or not my memories are many or few. I think I remember and share a lot, but my therapist keeps saying I don't, so I'm confused as to how someone judges a good memory vs poor memory in regard to early years.

Your lack of memory sounds extensive, though. In addition to trauma background, please consider how nutritional deficiencies might be making things worse for current day memory. I found that I was deficient in B-12. After two months of weekly injections, followed by now daily supplements, it's a lot better (in fact, I saw results after just the first injection, I was that depleted).
Thanks for this!

Im not sure if you had a lot of trauma in your life but if you have sometimes your mind makes you forget something really bad.

I wish my memory were that bad. I don't want to remember anything about my life, bad or good.

I have been told by T that I do. Don't know if I do outside of therapy.

That would be your answer right there. If you do in therapy its likely you do elsewhere in your life. Hence memory issues as you are not really here.

I have also had several suicide attempts, which resulted in seizures, and have taken mood stabilizers starts with a "Z" could those incidents have destroyed my memory?

I'm not sure what all would effect memory, but I have a horrible one too. I don't recall most of my childhood or teen years. My early 20's are spotty. Even now, I often forget last week. It's awful. I went to dinner at a friends house and she was talking about all the stuff we did when we were teenagers and I didn't recall any of what she was talking about. It really seemed as if she was talking about someone else, not me. I've just got used to it though bc what else are you going to do.
