Has anyone done DBT? My doc really wants me to do it. I have looked at the manual and think I would benefit from it. Can anyone tell me what their experience was with DBT....

I participated in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy about 2 1/2 years ago. We met hourly once a week for an entire year! It wasn't the standard sort of group. All of our meetings were instructional with some time for Q & A. I don't believe my instructor did a satisfactory job, so I personally didn't get or retain anything helpful. I do hope you have a better experience because the book has a ton of helpful information!

Take care,
Dee

Hi,

I didn't do it, but my ex-partner did it through a day program twice and then outpatient for a year. She found it very helpful. She like to analyze things and I think DBT does that to a certain extent.

I just started DBT. My T and I are doing it just by ourselves. There are no groups at the clinic I go to that do DBT. Their borderline program used to be set up on the DBT principle but they found out most of the borderlines that came into the program were to out of control to do it so they don't do it anymore but I really wanted to do it so my T got the book and we are doing it.

I've done one year of DBT and my current therapist is very influenced by some of the DBT stuff (acceptance and mindfulness). Personally... I felt that it really helped me turn my life around.

It is a very intense program with once per week (or twice per week, depending on how it is run) group therapy and once per week individual therapy. I got on really well with my individual therapist, which helped things considerably. I didn't like attending group, but I certainly did learn a lot from it. When group finished I was actually sorry that it had finished.

I'm a big fan of DBT and I tend to suggest to people that they do the program if at all possible. There are other forms of therapy that are in a similar vein, but I guess that my personal experience has been with DBT.

A lot of it depends on how you get on with your individual therapist, I think. I was really lucky that we hit it off quite well.
