Is it crazy to pay $600 a month for therapy?

$150 per session, once a week.

I do not know the rule regarding email contact.

It just seems like so much money to me. But I think I can swing it. I make about that every two weeks babysitting, not counting side jobs. And I don't need any of that money for my rent or bills. I can afford for it to be therapy money.

Should I?

It depends on what is included. How many sessions are in the month. I go 4 times a month (once a week) and it's about 160. So that's almost 650 a month. Give or take a few sessions I cancel or can't go to. Also outside contact (email) is permitted so that's there too.

I pay more than twice that (for two). It's been worth it.

eta: it is one session a week, but they seem to know what they are doing - and although I don't use it I can contact them between sessions.
Thanks for this!

That's what I pay. More, if there are five sessions in a month. It's been worth it to me. I never talked to my therapist about between session contact, but I usually email a few times a week and she responds once or twice (more if there's a lot going on). Always very short emails, but helpful.
Thanks for this!

I pay more than that a month and find it worth it.

With insurance covering 60% (once we meet deductible, which we did in, like, Feb. or March, looks like we end up paying $480 out of pocket monthly to see both T and marriage counselor weekly. Plus an extra $75 or so for monthly visits with p-doc. (Without the insurance it would be like...$1250--yikes! but that's for two T's once a week each, one of which is a PhD.)

H and I have discussed it and feel it's worth it to be spending this month both for my mental health and the health of our marriage (and for the sake of our daughter). So I think it's worth it. Luckily, the prescription I'm on now, sertraline (Zoloft), is completely covered by insurance, so no expenses there (unlike the couple months when I was on Cymbalta, which was like $120/month).

Therapy would not happen for me at that price. Not at all feasible.

I feel so lucky to be here in the UK where therapy with my current T is $60 per session. I would never be able to afford more. But I thought insurance normally covered you in the US? I thought it was so much cheaper over here because we don't normally have insurance.
Thanks for this!

That's about what I pay. T does not take insurance. I do have accessibility to her outside of session via email, text, and phone.

I'm completely flabbergasted by the prices I see on this thread.
How is it possible (and ethical) to ask for 250 dollars a session? Mind-boggling .
I pay the equivalent of 68 dollars per session and already it's a budget.
I wouldn't be able to afford therapy if it was more expensive and I'm amazed that people in the US can afford it at all (even with insurance).
Thanks for this!

I pay out of pocket. I don't want insurance involved.

If you can afford it who cares. I personally cannot afford 600 a month and I make good money. But not that good as I have a lot of expenses. If you make a lot then 600 a month isn't a big deal. It depends. Everyone has different income and different priorities

I don't make a lot it's just all my expenses are covered by SSI so my entire babysitting check can go to therapy.

I mean yea it COULD be going towards paying down school loans, but...

Insurance covers everything in my case - there's not even a copay.

(Insurance covers basically everything around here, except glasses, dental care and physical therapy. And waiting lists are long - it's not unusual to wait 8 months before you see a T)

I had counselling for 10 weeks and then so far had 2 sessions with a psychotherapist and it was "without cost" on the NHS. I say "without cost" (free), It does come out of the tax and national insurance that I pay.
I'm from the UK also.

I think it's a matter of what you can personally afford combined with how much your therapy is worth to you (how much you need it, how helpful it is, etc) and the average price of psychotherapy where you live. In Romania, a psychotherapy session costs around $30-40 and that is expensive for a lot of people here. $150 sessions would be out of the question for the vast majority of the population. But if you live in an area where this is the average price or even below average or if you personally can afford it even if it's expensive and if you find it helpful, why not? I think it's always a matter of personal possibilities and priorities.

If you are on SSI I would assume you are on state insurance? Doesn't it cover therapy? It seems awful amount to pay out of your pocket if you are on assistance. I'd have hard time shelling out such amount.

I wouldn't pay student loan until you done with school. I'd finish first and start paying 6 months after done with school and have a job
