Hey guys. Straight to the point, today's session sucked. It absolutely was the worst session I've ever been to. Nothing the T did but the content. To give you background, I'm pretty much at the end of my exposure therapy which means that I have to build the courage to do the very last thing. I dont have that courage at all and I literally sat in the chair at the end of the session and nearly cried, if I even said 1 word I would have bawled my eyes out. I just sat quietly and I was trying to feel something but all I felt was confusion and sadness because I can't just say okay im ready to do the last step. I have to give my T an answer about whether or not I'm down to do it within the next day and I have no clue what to say. It was just a horrible session and I just came home and cried for hours.

I guess what im asking is, how do I get over a horrible session like this?

Thank you!

Sorry you are struggling
Im not sure what exposure therapy is and I haven't a clue what the last thing that you have to do is either but it sounds to me like you are just not ready and that it feels awful but really it's ok to just not be there yet.
The only time I had a bad session I posted about it here and got some good advice and kind responses and it really really helped.
Sorry that my post is sort of sucky but I guess what I'm saying is hang in there until somebody on here comes along and does that for you too. In the meantime have another hug
Oh and I also wrote my T a letter telling her exactly how I felt and gave it to her in the next session and she responded very well. It was all ok and I'm sure it will be for you too
Thanks for this!

Are you unable to commit to the final step because of the anxiety that exposure raises for you? Or are you afraid it might signal the end of therapy? If it's an end you fear, I would talk to her about that because from things you've written, a large part of your anxiety/fear comes from loss....and the idea of a final anything might be triggering that. I dunno. Just a thought.

It's not that I'm afraid for it to end. I just cannot commit to the final step because of the fear

I would just tell your T that. Say right now it is too overwhelming, and describe how you left last session really upset and cried for hours. I think he/she would understand.
Thanks for this!

I had a rough session today myself. I called my T after I got home and said I was upset about the session and that I needed to talk to her on the phone. Talking to your T is the best way to recover from a bad session. From what you have shared about your T, she sounds very good and understanding. I think its important you tell her that you cried for awhile and are really overwhelmed. T's can help us the best when we tell them what is going on. Good luck!
