I have my first session tomorrow and I have absolutely no clue what to expect. What exactly happens? Is it just you talking with them listening, do they ask questions, etc?

It's a little different for everyone. In the first visit, the T might ask some questions, or you may be asked to fill out a questionnaire. Usually the T offers to tell you a little bit about what he/she does, and invites you to share what's troubling you.
It's mostly you talking and them listening, but they do ask questions and offer feedback. I would say it's about an 80/20 split. Good luck! |

The T will probably tell you a little about herself/himself and then ask you questions. Don't worry about not knowing what to talk about. They are used to dealing with people who are nervous on their first visit.

My T looked over some paperwork he asked me to complete, then jumped right in with, "So what brings you in to see me today?"

I would be sure to ask her/him some questions. Examples that I sometimes ask:
What method or approach do you use, what does a session typically look like? How will you help, specifically? Do you have experience with [particular issues]? Do you seek supervision regularly? What do you do in the case of an impasse or other conflict? What do you do to minimize the power imbalance inherent in therapy? Have you ever imposed termination on a client? |

I was in crisis when I met current T and also when I met ex-T. So half the session was history/"getting to know you", and the other half was dealing with the crisis.
