Hi everyone! i recently saw a psychotherapist with extensive experience, after a few visits and she got a feel for me she said one thing that i cant really figure out. She said my head was "Decapitated", I was somewhat horrified to hear this, obviously she means in the psychological sense, but beyond that im baffled. Is there a clinical definition for this? ive searched online and can find nothing so now im even more confused, or if any one has ever heard of this please let know, thanks kindly.

That's weird. You'll have to ask her what she meant, as this isn't any clinical/psychological term I'm familiar with. Must be some sort of metaphor.

Good luck!

Perhaps she doesn't know what decapitated means? I definitely have not heard that one before.

Or perhaps she means something like my grandmother did when she would say, "you're running around like a chicken with its head cut off," meaning emotions had taken over and you weren't thinking clearly?

Or could you have misheard her? Though for what I'm not sure - deactivated maybe?

Anyway, ask.
Thanks for this!

Are you mentally cut off from your body? Don't take care of yourself physically? Aren't aware of how you feel below the neck? That's how I would take it. I would also wish for a more articulate therapist. Decapitated just sounds gross.
Thanks for this!

Ok so its not just me then, it is not a clinical description, i didnt think it was, but i never did ask her what she meant, i guess i should have and havent seen her since. But seeing as i do have mood disorder it maybe is related to that. Yes I can be "out of control" sometimes with my moods and also thinking, its just a general statement i guess on her part, mind you its the only general statement she ever made to me.

Thanks for the replies.......

Metaphors mean nothing in terms of helpfulness if their meaning isn't clear. If she's one of those who can't relate in common terms i.e. uses a lot of psychobabble, then I'd question if she is the right therapist.

I would ask for more clarification.
The first one I see has often said I only operate from the neck up.

I had a counselor tell me that years ago. When I mentioned it to my analyst, she didn't agree with it. More the counsellor wasnt skilled enough

I think she is using a metaphor and I would ask for clarification. Possibly she is looking at Alchemy ( The spiritual part ) where decapitation is not meant literally and is meant in a figurative way , not in a clinical definition. Try looking for " Caput Mortem " in Alchemy on line , this may help you to see where I believe she may be coming from - but I could be completely wrong and she does mean something else!

That is a bizarre thing for a T to say to a client in a first (or any) meeting. I don't mind metaphors, but even if this means what it sounds like it does, it's an odds choice to use without further elaboration.
