Did you seek out a specific type of therapy when you chose the therapist?

I was in crisis. I had no idea what to do other than try not to kill myself. I later discovered I was seeing a psychodynamic therapist. She is very good and it's working well for me. I see her weekly. Previous attempts at therapy several decades ago were failures and I scorned it, but recently found that these were all CBT therapists with limited qualifications.

I was open minded and didn't know much about the different types. I knew what CBT was though, and I knew I didn't want that.

I had no idea about different types of therapy. I was just seeking out help and support. I've never had a therapist who specialized in one specific type of therapy; that's been a good thing for me.

I was so naive that I thought all therapy was talk therapy. No idea about specialties or modalities when I started.

Yes, I'd had CBT before and didn't want that, I knew I wanted a 'talk therapy', humanistic, psychodynamic type.

I went to the only T in the area who practised eco-therapy (therapy is outdoors). I knew i absolutely didn't want to do this in someones office - if that could be at all avoided. I had no idea what his methodology was or what it meant, i just wanted to be outside. Turned out well I think

No. It didn't matter. I just knew I wasn't interested in group therapy

I knew I wanted a psychodynamically oriented T who specialized in eating disorders.

Nope. I still don't really know what my T practices. CBTish mindful motivational interviewing? Never asked.

The impression I got from TV was that therapy involved activities like coloring and playing in sand trays. Alas, we just talk.

Yes, I knew I wanted some Person Centred ie who works with Rogers' theory of personality development and therapeutic relationship. It's worked exceptionally well for me.
Thanks for this!

No, I just chose a therapist I knew and trusted. Then I chose his type of therapy to train in because he and his style were so very helpful to me and in agreement with my beliefs and values.
Thanks for this!

I did not seek out therapy. I was talked into in over a period of time by my Medical doctor. She referred me to T to and I went.

In the beginning I was so dumb I didn't even know there were different kinds. I just went to one that my pdoc suggested that specialized in anxiety. She worked wonders.

I did not do much research before seeking help. I just knew I needed someone to talk to about the severity of my depression at the time. I got lucky and ended up with a very good T. I got lucky twice by finding my current T.

I did no research, I knew nothing about therapy except what I had seen in movies and that was mostly psychoanalysis.
I was referred to a therapist and just went with no idea at all about the different kinds of therapy that existed.
Turns out my therapist follows a humanistic approach: transactional analysis. Honestly if I had read about it prior to seeing her, I'm not sure I would have picked her.
Thanks for this!

I selected that I didn't know which would help, but know which ones probably wouldn't work for me. CBT more specifically.

Standard CBT was not for me. Trauma focussed CBT was more helpful among other modalities. But no , I didn't really seek out a specific type.

no... i knew he was recovery focused, but i didnt know much about therapy modalities or anything. but if i did have to find a new T i would look for one that uses the same kind of things my T does- trauma informed, mindfulness, psychodynamic, relational/attachment based

I voted other. I know the different types but didn't seek a specific type as most of the ones I've seen have used the best bits out of various styles to work through different types of problem .

I voted on the third option. I've already had therapies that didn't help me, so I knew what won't work on me. I didn't exactly knew what I wanted. I look for T's that had experiences with anxiety (thought the T's before me should have had that too, according to their websites and said they could help me, but no).

I knew I needed a trauma therapist (specifically with experience around sexual abuse and dissociation) with a varied tool bag for helping... I knew cbt and dbt were of little help to me, so I definitely didn't want anyone that relied heavily on either of those. I knew I wanted someone trained in emdr... other than those criteria, modality didn't matter.
