Yesterday, I received a termination letter from my psychiatrist who was prescribing my medicines and also doing psychotherapy. He stated the reasons were that I was texting him too much, I admitted to erotic transference, and also that I wasn't making enough progress in my therapy.

I'm scared and hurt.

Also, I am on Effexor XR 150 and 30 days isn't enough time to wean down from that.

He just kicked me to the curb.

I recently had more money because of my grandfather's life insurance but it seems that when the money ran out, he had no problem getting rid of me.

It happened without warning.

I'm heartbroken and feel abandoned.

Did he refer you to someone else at least for the prescriptions? He can't expect you to just go off medication like that. I'm pretty sure tgat's a huge ethical violation because a psychiatrist is a medjcal doctor. Especially with onlya month of pills and no set schedule to taper off.
Thanks for this!

I can understand your shock. Surely he will continue prescribing your meds until you get into see someone else.

I'm sorry things had to end like that. It would have been kinder if it could have been handled in person.

I'm so sorry but a T who would terminate you like that is not worth your time. Some people are really heartless, more than I ever imagined. The world is getting worse not better.

Thanks for the support. I'm really going through a hard time.

I wouldn't have even known about the termination if I hadn't stopped by his office to ask him why he wasn't speaking to me.

He gave me 30 days to find another psychiatrist and therapist.

He didn't give me a plan for weaning off of the Effexor XR.

I sat with him in his office crying my eyes out asking him for another chance and that I still wanted him for my therapist. And he coldly said, well I don't want to be your therapist.

My heart aches and I regret opening up and sharing everything with him. I've been with him since 2008.

He didn't give you a plan for going off the meds because he wants you to find a new psychiatrist and continue the medication. I know it sucks, but unfortunately, you will need to find a new psychiatrist for treatment.
Thanks for this!

I'm sorry this happened to you. It doesn't say where you live, but if it's in the U.S. most psychiatrists and mental health workers have an ethical obligation to provide a client with a list of, at least, two or three possible referrals. If he hasn't done that, he can be reported to the AMA who licenses him. It won't cause him to lose his license, but the complaint does go into his professional file. It's important if you report him that you indicate that he made no plan for you to get follow up and the medication that you are on. This kind of behavior by a medical professional is disgusting in my opinion. If he wanted to refer you, he should have told you in person and provided you with scripts for a length of time you needed in order to get set up with another psychiatrist. It's very hard to get into a new practice--sometimes people are put on waiting lists for four to six months!

If you don't want to go through a complaint process, I'd advise you to post a scathing review of him on yahoo or other sites. More and more people are going to review sites to find out info on their health care providers. It won't ding him horribly, but you'll get the satisfaction of letting others know how terrible he is as a psychiatrist.

I would definitely advise finding a new psychiatrist or someone to prescribe you the med. I've gone off effexor cold turkey when I was more impulsive and even though I knew it would be difficult, it was brutal. Even if you have to have your regular dr prescribe it, its worth doing.

One thing you might do while you are looking is to go see your primary care physician who will probably be willing to continue your effexor prescription during this transition period since it is only the one med and at a pretty normal dose. If you don't have a primary physician, this might be a good time to look into getting one.

If you have insurance, get the list of covered psychiatrists and therapists in your area and work from there.

I think it's important you prioritise your self care, and find new providers for your health care asap, especially continuation of meds.
It's also important that you realise that you are not to blame for this. His reasons for termination seem to blame you, and that is wrong. He is terminating you because of his failure to handle your issues properly and professionally. His bad, not yours.
His treatment of you has been very unethical and down the line when you have a new T and are feeling more settled, you are within your rights, if you wish, to report him for unethical treatment/abandonment.
Thanks for this!

I am not sure if you are based out of the U.S. if you are, he is at minimum suppose to provide you a list of referrals.

I am so sorry it happened to you but why would you go off meds? You just need a different pdoc. Ask your gp if has ideas. Not having this pdoc doesn't mean you need to be off Meds

I'm really sorry. Please be kind to yourself. You didn't deserve to be treated that way.

I'm sorry your psychiatrist terminated with you like this, it sounds terribly abrupt. I'm not sure if you are in the US, but if you are most general practitioners will prescribe psych meds for patients, so it'd not as urgent to find a prescriber as it might be to find a therapist. if you have trouble finding a pdoc, I know a lot of patients that really like, even prefer, psychiatric nurses. They often do therapy and can prescribe. What ever you decide, good luck.

That is sadistic for him to do something like that? Where is the empathy and care?
