Ok, i have exausted my Internet search and am back to ask you all.
I have noticed that during some highly charged or emotional sessions, i can barely talk, get words pushed out and seem to stutter uncontrollably. I am not even sure how long i have five it, but i just noticed it several months ago and it was so bad i couldn't seem to finish a couple of words let alone a sentence. I'm surprised my t didn't pull his hair out and at times it about made me want to scream and i even have up talking sometimes. I don't think i even notice it sometimes because i seem to catch it when i get frustrated wroth myself and then realize it is happening again. I have NEVER stuttered before and i am almost 50. It doesn't always happen and not even always when stressed in a session, but it dies ONLY happen in sessions and only when stressed (of course i also don't get emotional anywhere other then in t's office,so don't know if it would happen elsewhere). Anybody else have a stuttering issue in therapy when emotionally upset? |

My husband stutters in therapy when he is really struggling. He rarely stutters outside of the t office, and when he does it's more like a little pause. I am probably the only one that notices it-and that is only because I have seen it at such an extreme in therapy

Does it bother you? Myself I have habits or tendencies that only come out under great stress and one of those places, ironically, is in therapy. I was self-conscious about them but then since my therapists did not comment on them, I felt more at ease.

Partless: It does bother me, but not that it adds to it. I don't even notice I am doing it until some point where I realize I can't get the words out. My t has NEVER even mentioned it and although it is something I have never done, it is very low in the rank of the things I worry about regarding upsetting my t so I haven't said anything either. I am not worried about what he would say here, but was still wondering if I am alone or if this was something others dealt with. |

Come to think of it, I remember reading someone mention something similar a while back, stutter only in session but not outside. It was a woman though and also she said she was a shy person and often mumbled when she talked when she was anxious (outside session). But I think she had other things that happened to her only in session, aside from stuttering, there a short list...don't remember all but she played with her hand or something like that too. I don't know if that is helpful to you but for her she could link the two things, mumbling and stuttering.

I've only done this once, when leaving a message about something that had happened during session. I was emotionally unhinged and it took me several tries with every other word to get everything out. It's something I do when I'm under a certain type of stress. It's hard to explain, but it's horrible.

Not in therapy, since I am not in therapy now, but it happens a lot in everyday life. It seems to me pretty obvious what the causes are. This is a form of dissociation, which is a protective mechanism when the mind cannot find any other way of coping with the stress.

It sounds like during therapy you are working through difficult issues and stuttering happens because working through issues can be painful work and anxiety-provoking. |
