I am being given my therapist's notes about me so that I can take them to my university's disability resource center and register there for accommodations. I'm not sure if I'll be able to read her notes or not, and I'm not sure if I should...

I need a third option. I did not want to read former psychiatrist's notes about me. But I am planning to request the notes of Nos. 2 and 3 in preparation for complaints against them...I only need a few pieces of information from them, so I don't think I will read them all.

I said yes. Except I want to read the "secret" ones (the ones that aren't for legal reasons) that I'm sure she must keep, nobody has THAT good of a memory!! She's read me the ones she has to keep for legal reasons, and they are bor-ing as all getout. I wanna read the secret ones. But she won't cop to having those!

I have read my psychiatrist's notes on me and found them to be quite interesting. However, I really don't think I could handle reading my therapist's notes. I think that would be too painful for me to take in.

No I don't want to know exactly how badly she misunderstands me and is wrong.

I used to read the legal ones and found that they were not helpful and actually harmful so I stopped. Ok they were helpful when she'd say something in session and I couldn't remember the exact word for it and then it would be in her note. But mostly, they caused me more grief than they were worth.

I am mixed on the private ones... the same reason I read the legal ones, because I want to know... but then I don't want to know, if my perception is so far off from hers.

This is something I've thought about a few times. I'm not sure I would want to but then a part of me is curious too.

Maybe in a few years when our ending isn't so raw I will request them.

I voted yes. I would want to read both the legal and private notes if given the chance. I don't think I will ever be given the chance and cannot see myself ever asking to read the notes. But I am curious. So, yes.

Same as InnerPeace, I'm a curious person, so if I had the chance I would want to read the notes. I don't expect I would find much that surprised me, but I would have a look.
However I'm not going to request to read the notes as it's not necessary and I have no reason other than curiosity.

I would go for a 'maybe' option. My T's contract says I can request to see his notes at any time but that he thinks it's better to do it in session so that we can discuss anything that comes up.
At the moment I'm slightly but not significantly curious, but I certainly have no wish to spend session time on it at present.

I asked my therapist what she writes when she's taking notes in sessions ans she told me she writes what I'm talking about. I said "so you don't write any observations about me?" and she said "no, only what you are saying". So it wouldn't be interesting to me to read her notes if they are only a summary of my discussions in sessions. If she was actually writing observations about me, I don't think I'd want to read it to be honest. There is no legal way in my country for me to request therapy notes anyway so this is all theoretical.

Couldn't have said I how felt about this better myself. I'm curious, but I'm knee deep in some important work right now. It's not worth giving up session time.

If he would just give them to me to read at my leisure, though? I'd be all over that. But I don't know that I could work up the courage to ask.

I haven't read any of my current T 's notes yet, but I requested and read them from all two previous T. Imo, they belong to me.

I answered "yes," but in reality I don't really care about them, but there is no reason why I wouldn't either. I already know more or less what is in them because he showed parts of them to me on several occasions. Nothing much to see there. They are brief, often in short phrases that are barely decipherable to anyone but him, very objective, etc. No juicy tidbits that I didn't already know. It isn't like they'd tell me anything that I didn't already know; I was there, and as objective as they are, it is more or less very brief summaries of sessions.

I'd be much more interested to read my pdocs notes which have much more information in them, much of which I am pretty certain I don't remember in any detail, and have more assessment in them, particularly from my inpatient stays. One day I may get them but I suspect they'd be hugely expensive (that file is hundreds of pages long).
Thanks for this!

No...R doesn't take notes, and P's note taking was one of many frustrating parts of our relationship. (She would note down almost everything I said, putting that down to 'You have an interesting turn of phrase, and it's important to get that right.'

Errr, no....what's important is you taking this on board and actually frigging helping me!

Although I am curious, I think ultimately I would not want to read the notes. My T does indicate on his paperwork that he will review notes in session if requested. But I trust that what he says about me and our therapy in session accurately reflects his thoughts outside of session, and I trust that what he writes is respectful of me.

I don't want to add another element in which I might feel misunderstood when ultimately I believe he understands me.

I didn't know I could read the notes. But, I won't ask to unless something happens where I think I need to.

No t I ever saw took notes during session.

I'm sure, if they called me something really bad, I would get upset. I would obsess about it. I would probably grill them as to why they formed their opinion, get into a whole 'defending my life' debate with them about it.

I'm sure 'neurotic' would be in those notes.

I answered yes out of curiosity I would like to read them. However she has showed me her notes. She writes random cue words on a page based upon what I say. Nobody besides she and I would ever know own what was really discussed. She said if she ever had to submit her notes to somebody she could utilize the notes and write something. Otherwise they stay that way.

He's told me he keeps it pretty generic

I wouldn't wanna see the ones of current T.

I had a T for like 7 weeks when I was around 12. I'd like to see her notes (I can still request them, they have to keep them for 20 years...). I've been wondering for a very long time wth was going on in her head... It'd be interesting, especially because my memory for around this time is really bad.

Any notes she keeps for herself, that is. Not the official, produceable ones.
