A Heartbeat Away
Standing on the curb the blind woman tapped her cane Back and forth back and forth Pssst, pssst she said A passerby heard her and asked her what she needed Could you help me cross the street? Which way are you going, the stranger asked I don’t know said the blind woman North, south, east or west, inquired the traveler I’m not sure, she said Do you know your final destination, he queried I’m going home, she said. I’m going home. Well, where is home, he wondered aloud I can’t find it, she mumbled Can you describe it, he offered Well, it’s peaceful there, she whispered Is it in the country, he countered It could be, she recounted, it could be Well, must you take a taxi, he asked Not necessarily, the woman explained Then it must be nearby, he declared Yes, the directions indicated so, she admitted Then, how can I help you, the gentleman offered Just help me cross this street the woman repeated Hold my arm, and we will cross together, he murmured Thank you, sir, you’re a kind gentleman, she avowed But, how will you find your home once I leave, he pleaded It’s a heartbeat away, she sighed, a heartbeat away.
