Curious to hear how others found their T. Searching online? Recommendation from someone? Referred by a medical professional? Through your insurance?

Hey
I did a 2 week day patient program at a private psych hospital and one of the facilitators started a weekly evening group for people who had completed the course. She was brilliant so after a while I asked if I could see her privately, and she said, "of course!"

Group facilitators that are practitioners are usually happy to take on clients. It was actually so incredibly helpful to have both the group session and the private session with the same T. We got so much out of it.

I searched online. I then researched his professional experience and read the free sample of his book on Kindle.

Through my doctor at the time. I was resistant to therapy but trusted my doctor. She asked me to consider just going to see t for just a few sessions. It was somebody she knew personally having worked together a few years before. T was out of drs supossed referral list but she wanted me to see somebody she knew would be safe

Online. I had just about given up looking after trying quite a few out with serious mixed (all bad for me) results. Just one last look, a last ditch attempt before I gave up, and there she was. Made an appointment not expecting much and here we are today.

Insurance list is where I started because therapy wasn't going to happen without insurance helping to pay for it. He was the first person I tried on the list and I worked with him for about 10 years.

Online. I was looking for a male marriage counselor and was immediately drawn to his profile. Husband agreed and when we met him it felt like things just clicked. Now we see him together and both individually.

In this state searched online, even used the phone book, although I was resistant to the idea. Eventually found the one I see now through a referral from a physician.

I was researching names online (on psychology today web site) that my pdoc had given me, and stumbled upon current t's profile because the words "dream work" caught my eye. I called one on his list and her, and she was the one that called me back, so I scheduled with her. That was 5.5 years ago this month!

I was referred by my CPN who didn't think I needed one but was in talks with my Peer Support Worker and the Psychologist from a group I was attending. Now I'm away to finish with her as she is a Trainee. Really nervous about this

L via a recommendation from a prof I was close to. I had just been released from IP and my aftercare plan was a single appointment with a pdoc I never met, who was booked out and couldn't fit me in until the next month. I took things into my own hands because I was in crisis obviously, having been hospitalized, hellooooooo? A month down the line, the pdoc was the worst experience I ever had with a health professional, so I stuck with L.

Last year L recommended I see a specialist colleague of hers for at least a few treatments if not more long term (if I liked him) and that's how I got M. I still see them both. They've come up with a collaborative thing where once in a while they meet up to discuss my case and make sure their approach is unified.

Met him in a long term residential treatment facility. He worked with me there but we've both left that place now

I tried to see someone that my wife had seen years previous; however, she was not taking new clients. She referred me to someone else but he too was not taking new clients since he would be leaving the clinic in 6 months. I got passed off to current T and I am grateful.

T2 was a 3 session assessment and that was a referral through PCP. I would not have stayed with him.
Thanks for this!

Wow... really interesting! I started my search from my insurance and then looking them up online. The first 7 I called either didn't have time or never called back. The last one I called I felt like I was taking a gamble on as I knew nothing other than she was covered by my insurance. Absolutely no online presence.

I searched online and found a group practice. I sent a generic email and one T got back to me. A month and half later she ended up moving so she referred me to one of her colleagues who was also working at the same practice but making the transition to private practice. I've now been seeing this T for about 9 months. The only thing she has online is her Psychology Today profile so she must rely on that and referrals I guess...

I was assigned to him when I was discharged from the hospital and put in a Day Treatment Program. It must have been Divine Intervention because he is like a gift from God. I have been with him 10 years and I trust him explicitly.

Former therapist was recommended by a friend (who is also a therapist and knew her through her professional network).

Current therapist (had to switch due to insurance bureaucracy): another recommendation by this same friend.

PDoc: recommended by first therapist.

So: recommendations work for me

Recommendation from somebody. So far, she is the most helpful of all of the practitioners I have seen.
