Greetings. I am new to the site. I recently started seeing a therapist. I have seen therapists before (three others) every week. I can't say therapy wasn't at all helpful, but I will say that it never "fixed" things for me. Now I am trying again, and I can only financially afford the rate every other week. I have only been to one session so far.

I guess I am feeling a little bit defeated, wondering if twice a month will be enough? Every week didn't solve things, but I don't know if they were the right fit for me. Every time it has been a lot of talking, and how do you feel about that, etc, and this time I looked for someone more solution based and cognitive-behavioral. Still, I don't know if twice a month will be enough. Ideally, how long should you wait before you expect some kind of improvement?
Hugs from:

Hi copingmeadow. Welcome to Psych Central. Sorry you are unsure if therapy will help you. No one here is qualified to tell you. Here is an option.

Make an appointment with a psychiatrist and see what kind of diagnoses and med prescriptions they suggest. Maybe since most disorders are brain disorders this might help stabilize the situation.

I go every 3-4 weeks. I still find it helpful. But we're also not working on anything deep. If I was, we'd go back to every week for awhile.

It's just my opinion, but if you're working on past trauma, every other week might not be enough. If you're dealing with everyday life, it could be enough. It really just depends.

Is there any way you might see a different therapist for less money? I do think twice a month might be a bit hard. Though if this person is very practical perhaps they will be able provide you with a lot of ideas to help you between sessions. How do you feel about the therapist, apart from the cost?

Thank you for the replies. I have been trying to heal from a past relationship for the past five years unsuccessfully. Hoping to find some relief.

I like her so far. I felt like we clicked pretty well. But I have liked the others as well, they were nice enough, but the issues remained.

I could see someone else for less money. A part of me wants to give her a chance because I do like her, plus as silly as it sounds, once you get out that hard story to someone in the first session, you almost don't want to have to retell it.
