Man the t I have now pissed me the hell off. Trying to say it's suspected that I have BPD. Since when? I've been in treatment for 17 years and it's never come up before. I've been pretty stable since I started seeing him and only wanted to see him to learn DBT. the **** man. He better not put that **** on my record. Anyways, I texted my old t to ask her about it and she called me yesterday morning and she was as baffled as me. She was like "you're totally NOT BPD." I mean I did work with her for 2 years and I was no where near as stable as I am now. She said sometimes inexperienced t's just label people that who are uncooperative or when they don't want to do their job. SO MUCH FUN. I've been cooperative. I've done everything asked. I DON'T HAVE THE SYMPTOMS. My t now said that emotional reactivity was a big one so I told my t that and she was like "who the hell isn't emotionally reactive?" This is ******** man and I will fight it. It's bad enough I already have 5 dx's.
![]() My old t said to be real nice about it. lmao. Go in an ask what the justification of making the BPD diagnosis was and to not get angry. I mean I looked up the symptoms and they don't explain what goes on with me. Bipolar symptoms match perfectly unfortunately, but that's what I've been diagnosed with since I was 18, I'm 33 now. Maybe I should take a kpin before Friday's session. |

This happened to me, too. I then went and saw a therapist who specializes in BPD/DBT and after a couple sessions she disagreed emphatically. She thought it had been suggested only because of the sh; nothing else fit, and even the sh is so recent it didn’t really fit the diagnostic criteria.
I ended up dumping the therapist who suggested BPD. The whole thing was infuriating. If I wanted a diagnosis I would ask for one. That is not why I am there in therapy. |

My therapist originally thought I might have BPD as well. He originally diagnosed me with depression and I had asked him if he thought I had BPD he said he thinks I might. I said I don't want that and I don't think I have that even though I have some of the symptoms. One day he asked me if I wanted him to determine that diagnosis and he asked me a ton of questions in the end he determined that no I do not have it. He said he was basing his original thoughts on my trauma abuse background. After going through all the criteria questions he was convinced not.
I would definitely ask your therapist what criteria are there using to determine that diagnosis. I would also have a list of BPD criteria that does not fit you and point it out to them. Good luck to you. In the end there is nothing wrong with having BPD but if you don't have it it's not a label you want to be burdened with. |

Sometimes people with C-PTSD get diagnosed with BPD mistakenly.

I was diagnosed for years as bpd ( tell me what teen girl doesn’t fit the criteria??)
As I aged my last three therapists have said I am no way bpd but have GAD and an insecure attachment style. Bpd is treatable but as a diagnosis it can be damaging. Some providers treat it like the plague. Maybe you should see a new t altogether? My old long term t once said “bpd is the diagnosis you get when your treatment team doesn’t like you”. He was being facetious but there is an element of truth in it. |

I would file a complaint against anyone who gave me that diagnosis. It harms the client and can follow you for life causing future harm.
The BPD diagnosis should be unethical. It has no place in helping clients. If only one gave you the dx while several others have not, you may have a case. Things like 'unstable sense of self' are extremely subjective and can be misused to give someone a labeling dx. |
