I was rejected other services (a whole other story) at the clinic I had been at but they said I could join one of their new group sessions that they are making. Have any of you tried group therapy? I'm afraid to talk one on one with my T so I don't think a group would be any better

I've only done groups IP, but they were ok. It was sometimes helpful to listen to others talk about stuff that I was too scared to talk about. I didn't feel pressure to talk. Learned some stuff.

Sorry you can't get other services, if that is what you want. But based on my experience, I would give it a try. I think the biggest factor is probably who runs the group and how it is run.

Yeah I wish I could get other services but I guess they won't give them to me anymore. They didn't say how the groups would work and I don't even know if they're run by an actual counsellor there or how it works

I'm in group therapy once a week
It's a trauma group
There's 4 women in the group
I like it, but it's definitely not a substitute for individual therapy

I think groups could be really good but I've never been in a good group. They had them all day long inpatient and then when I was IOP. People just took turns saying how depressed they were or how they got their drugs. There wasn't much interaction at all in any of them.

The DBSA group I went to for a while never really got together; people came and went. And the problem with its being peer-lead in this case was that each of the alternate leaders became very manic and things fell apart.

I don't think my experiences can be normal...? A great book about group therapy is The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy by Irvin Yalom. Actually all of his books are great.

It's here: https://www.amazon.com/Theory-Practi.../dp/0465084486
but your library should have it.

I've done psychodrama as a group therapy several times and I loved it.

I myself do prefer individual therapy since I am working on some very specific issues at the moment.

However, I have done group therapy in the past, and it was alright. A lot of times, other group member struggling with the same issues have different insights that can help you, too. Plus, I made incredible friends back then.

I think it's something you'd really have to look into and then decide if it's for you or not.

I guess it has some positives. I found group therapy pretty limited. Well very limited.

Me too, I've also been in a Gestalt therapy group for 18 months. Both very useful.

I found group therapy very helpful once I became comfortable enough to share in it
