I have sciatica and have been in a lot of pain lately, especially when I sit too long. That happened today so when I went to my session I was hurting. Sitting didn't work so I tried lying down on the couch. That wasn't good either. T offered to give me my check back if I didn't want to stay, but I wanted her to help me relax before my MRI tonight.
T noticed I was holding my breath so I started taking deeper breaths. We did 4 counts in and 5 out together. Then I decided to stand up and play my last recorded voice lesson and sing along with it. Singing makes me feel good. Singing to T made me forget the pain for a while. But when I finished, I said "I know you're not my friend because who would pay $165 to sing to their friend! But I felt so good and relaxed. Who cares about the money? I'm paying for your time and it is what it is!" I don't feel like I wasted my money. I wanted to calm down, and singing to T is something I never could have done in my past. It's totally out of character for me to sing to others. It's a real accomplishment for me. I've sung in my session before but this was the first time I looked at her while doing it. I was very scared about the MRI but I did it! I took one larazipam pill beforehand which is affecting me now! So this post may be a little wacky. I have to go to sleep. |

I didnt realize you were taking voice lessons. Im envious! I sang in choir from 5th grade thru high school, and a little bit afterwards, but i feel like now my voice is old croaky, not that it was ever that good to begin with. Plus in this college town, the choirs are filled with literal opera and broadway singers.

I think you did really important work in this session and that it was well worth the money. Though I do hope you can let go of judging yourself so harshly about how you spend your money.

I emailed T about the session, and that I got through the MRI, and part of her response was " I'm happy our paths crossed and that we are heartmates." Aw, T

My T told me that singing has the same effect as deep breathing exercises. She wants me to sing.
The cool thing is I sang a lot (choirs, state competitions, musical w/solos, rock band lead and back up). My daughter once said, “How can you possibly know the words to so many songs??” It’s because I got a little radio when I was five or six, and I carried it everywhere, singing. It’s good for you!!! |

I think of those kind of sessions as the cement that helps hold the good stuff together while we heal. It sounds like you two had an awesome session. You both did good work.

People spend money on all sorts of things. I see nothing wrong in spending one's money on something that makes you feel good.

Isn't it helpful beyond that hour to know that you can find ways to be pain free? I don't know the science behind it, but I think I've heard that a lot of emotion is stored in the back. If so, it seems that you found a way to release some of it. Even if it was just for those few moments, it's something to build on or replicate.
