A professional once told me what to do and what not to do regarding a life decision, and told me how it'll be like. I did not listen out of ego, because I want to make a decision on my own without anyone's guidance.

But looking back, I kind of regret it. I just don't like anyone guiding my life and prophesying it

I don't use MDs for anything but would not comply with an order by an MD or a therapist to do or not do anything. And would not go back to one who thought they got to tell me what to /not do.

Live and learn. Yes, I wouldn't want anyone guiding my life. And yes, sometimes people prophesying things about my life can be right. Does that mean they are always right?

I don't like that either.

I prefer people to explain why they support a particular choice so I can consider their ideas then make up my own mind.

There's nothing wrong with listening to what other people have to say. You can still make up your own mind. One thing doesn't determine the other.

I'm fiercely independent but I've learned that other people can have perspective and wisdom that I don't. I don't mind borrowing it if it's helpful to me.

That doesn't work for me. It never has and probably never will. Sometimes I like advice, but never orders. And I always feel like I have the right to ignore advice, no matter who it comes from.

The problem for me comes when maybe the advice someone gives me is perfectly reasonable, but I ignore it because I'm too stubborn to admit they were right.

The only time a "professional" tried to give me orders was in rehab. Told him where to stick it and left.
According to him, if I didn't do what he was telling me to do, I'd drink again.
That was 15yrs ago. Still haven't drank.

Exactly my thought!
But there's something worse - pushing you too much food for thought out of topic to what you are talking about
